Today, I upgraded my Dell Dimension E520 from Media Center Edition to Vista Home Premium. Other than picking the wrong version of Vista I didn't any problems. Before I upgraded, Windows told me remove my internet security pack (i.e. Firewall, Virus scanner, spam blocker, etc.)and later I put it back on. I had nothing but trouble and had to used system restore get off. You guys might need to buy new virus scanner if you upgrade to Vista. I going to have to buy one...

Which version did you want? I hope not Ultimate you don't gain much over home premium.
If you want a good anti-virus that's Vista compatible go with AVG http://free.grisoft.com, plus it's free.

I first bought Home Basic, but you can't upgrade XP Media Center with Vista Home Basic.
I got a free virus scanner earlier today, but I intend to buy a better Virus scanner or an Internet Security Application later.

I don't know beans about Vista, but if I ever decide to update my operating system, I s'pose I'll just stick with Symantec.

Symantec is on a list of companies with Virus scanners or Internet Security Applications for Vista, Greg. I'm thinking of buying Microsoft's Internet Security App, I have a rebate form it.

Speaking of Windows Vista, is there a reason I want to get it?
I'm running XP Home Edition on two machines and XP Media Center on another. If they ain't broke, I don't want to fix them, but they do exhibit odd quirks once in a while.

In my opinion... the only real difference is the look.. and the way that things are set up... Like the Control Panel is different... I didn't have Media Center .. I just had XP... so that is new for me.. But I wouldnt say that it is better than XP, just different... It actually took me a while to find some things:)

Aw darn; I don't want to have to learn a new user interface. I'm guessing that the real changes are behind the scenes, but I don't know. I only first heard of Vista about a week ago.

Here's something from MATY. Apparently most of the new pieces can be installed into XP.

<snip>Vista's New Features
IE 7 - Can download onto XP.
WMP 11 - Can download onto XP. 10's better anyway.
Sidebar - Google Desktop, DesktopSidebar, and there's even a ported version to XP.
Desktop Search - Google Desktop, Yahoo Desktop Search.
Aero - There's no equivalent on Windows XP.
Flip3D - There's no equivalent on Windows XP.
UAC - You'll usually just click "Agree" anyway, I don't think it asks for a password to do anything so it's not as secure as Linux.
Windows Defender - Can download onto XP, worthless when you have a Virus Scanner.
DirectX 10 - Not in XP, but no games use it yet. In addition, OpenGL has poor performance in Vista.
They cut out WinFS, PC-to-PC Sync(Groove?), and Monad which would have been reasons to actually buy the thing. Instead they just added the things above, changed the Security Stack, and modified a lot of the interface to make it more Macish.<snip> |
