Success! With most of my downloads reinstalled, but no hacks, Jodie Larson was able to go to The Hub and fiddle around with the toys. The Hub loaded in less than 2 minutes and the speed was normal.

I think it was one of the kleptohacks.

Yep, anything with that long hex string type filename is quite suspicious. Means it came in on a house that someone installed with the Maxis installer. Alex sneaked onto your computer and did it, right?

It's probably outdated too.

<sneaks onto Greg's computer and deletes all copies of the Maxis Sims2Pack installer>

<installs SimText for good measure so Greg can fix up any other weird hex filenames as they appear>

And yes, I remembered you had the high speed thing the first time you tried NL, that's why I spent 10 minutes rooting through old posts looking for it!

Yep. I got a copy of phonehack for Uni from someone's house download <sureptitiously points at Greg> and it took me quite some time and pain to figure it out.

Mea culpa. I've only recently learned how to clean out a house before uploading it. I still need to go back and fix all the ones that are already on line; forgot about that!

Rose, what's that Text thingie you mentioned?

Progress report: I installed some of the hacks and restarted the game. Jodi went down to the Crypt O'Noodles (or whatever it is). Downtown lots are working, but Family Kiss went away again.

So I know the Kissing Kulprit is somewhere in the set of hacks that I installed before this run. That means they're somewhere in the Simlogical or Squinge sets, or among the selected few Kleptohacks I installed.

I haven't reinstalled Danny's DMA Sims stuff yet. I'll do that last, except maybe for the two controller things. I miss those!

The Insimenator appears to be working like a champ! Eric's cuisine reigns supreme!

New oddity: Somehow the sign for the Happy Valley Tribune got reversed. At least that's how it shows up in my catalog now. I can fix it, but it's a pretty weird thing to happen. Thinking

SimText is the utility that I wrote that reads the CTSS and STR# resources from a package, puts up a dialog of them, and renames the package file to your selection. It uses Windows Shell Commands, so you can use Undo from the Edit menu of any folder window, just as if you'd used the Windows Rename command.

It also does a "one click install" of any package to a subfolder of Downloads with the same name as the current folder. Example: I save a zip to E:\My Downloads\The Sims\The Pearl. After unzipping, SimText will install them to My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Downloads\The Pearl. This operation can also be undone.

Sita and I have been beating on it for months, so I need to get off my butt and release it as a premium download.

That sounds pretty neat! What does it do if there's no STR resource?

Digress report: In addition to no Family Kiss, I also don't have the "Hand Baby To..." interaction. That at least gives me another clue about what to look for.

(Heather the former gypsy just had a baby.)

If there are no STR# or CTSS resources, the only choice is the current file name...

Okay, just so I completely understand what is (basically) happening here:

When someone designs a house (with or without a family) & packages it/uploads it so others can download it, that house can retain fragments of (at least some of) any hacks/mods that were on that designer's PC at the time so whoever happens to download/install that house gets an unsuspected (and most likely unwelcome/incompatible) suprise added to their game aswell, right??

shocked

Yes, I would very much like to see SimText made available, if it isn't already! It sounds like a must-have & a half!

(Does that "Clean Pack Installer" do anything to help prevent this, or....? )

ZW-that is precisely what happens, unless the builder uses a clean game with no hacks and no third-party downloads.

For building, I use a clean game with no hacks and the only downloads in my folder are walls, floors and window/door textures that I, myself, have created.

CleanInstaller is supposed to show everything that is included in a SimsPack, but I think there have been occasions when it misses some things.

This is why I am very careful about where I download lots.

Clean Installer at least keeps the original file names!

I actually wrote SimText to fix up the names of skins I made. Then I discovered it did a nice job on walls and floors that I made, plus things where the Maxis Installer had mangled the names.

Do you mean it helps with all those numbers and letters and gobbledegook? Are those numbers that Maxis assigns while importing necessary to the files function?
