but but but - Greg, are some of the hacks you have installed still, pre-NL versions? Cos many (most) were updated? When I put a new EP in I pull out ALL hacks and hacked objects, and then put them back in one at a time after checking each one out on its creators' site. (And there are several Pescado hacks that are sposed to work with the EPs I have that still crash my game.)

Also, downtown lots do take a long time to load (but never 15 minutes) FOR ME.

Have you updated the DMA Sims too? They always cause me problems when I put a new EP in, and conflict with some hacks.

Greg, if you decide to create a new Downtown, create the new one, then delete the old one. I've heard bad things happen if you do it the other way around.

FYI, the differences between Downtown lots and other commercial lots: the Count, the Countess, Mr. Big and Ms. Diva autonomously appear on Downtown lots, but not on neighborhood or shopping district lots unless invited; more visitors come to Downtown lots; the Downtownies only appear on Downtown lots.

If you have problems with the gypsy after your Sim marries her, I'll get you the link on which BHAVs to copy from a normal Sim into her to improve her. You know what happens if you marry a driver; if you marry a mascot or cheerleader, they retain many of their most annoying characteristics. Don't know what happens if you marry the gypsy!

For my last experiment last night, I completely removed my Downloads folder from the tree. (That took a while!)

I also deleted everything from ...\The Sims 2\Config\userStartup.cheat except "sethighestallowedlevel 10".

The previous version of userStartup.cheat, where The Hub ran at high speed, said:
Code:
intprop censorgridsize 0
sethighestallowedlevel 10
boolprop useShaders true
boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true

So I had the game running with zero fan-created content and no testing cheats.

Then I had Jodie drive down to a place called "Sam's Hangout" or somesuch. It seemed to go normally.

Erm, that is, the lot seemed to load in a reasonable amount of time and it ran at normal speed. The sims were their typical Maxian abnormal selves, of course.

Jodie had rather wretched time at that Hangout place, but at least the software didn't seem buggy.

Conclusion: Something in my Downloads folder is causing the anomaly of the downtown lots, and whatever it is, it does not show up in Clean Installer as a hack.

I think the next step is to create a new Downloads folder and put in files one at a time, making sure to put in only things that I know are clear.

You've got NL now!

Try looking in My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Logs for a file named CustomContentObjects.txt. Anything described as "Overrides" is a hack!

There might also be files named something like ObjectError_N001_t31425.txt in that directory. Look for the ones with a Date/Time Modified of approximately when you were getting that stream of dialog boxes. Post the top part, down to at least the second Frame X: line, preferably the 3rd, more if the following frames look suspicious.

Hm, anyone remember where the thread with Greg's original NL rant is? He had the superspeed problem then, and there was a suggestion for what was wrong...

Yes, I read the whole 4 pages of the thing... The two suggestions were:
1) Update/remove the no-townie-regen hack. If you installed the OFB patch, you need a different one than if you have unpatched OFB.
2) Just don't play The Hub. The other lots seem to be ok.

I'm wondering if The Hub could be salvaged by packaging, bulldozing, unpacking, and replacing the lot... Do use Clean Installer for the unpacking part!

BTW, MikeD says you can place the driveway anywhere (see the big apartment thread), and I've seen a cheat so you can have your Sims parallel park.

Invite From a Stranger?

The really annoying about that if you tell I don't want go out they'll keep calling. Another thing, if you have a date with a downtownie (maybe townies and dormies as well) of a certain quality level (i.e. dream date), "friends" of your date will call you up to do a group outing.

I've never had repeat calls. I did accidentally agree to go and change my mind and not go once... the caller was steamed!

My first guess was some sort of Community Lot Visitor Controller, but after poking through TwoJeff's version, the numbers and names don't seem to match up.

Looking at the notownierespawn hack now...

No, I just started with a standard Maxian neighborhood based on the Viper Canyon terrain. Then I let the game create Downtown from its default template.

Yup, there's a My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Logs\CustomContentObjects.txt file here. It's dated 1/28/2007 12:41 AM so it appears that it hasn't been updated since the time I first installed the Downtown neighborhood.

There's a lot of stuff in here! shocked

I don't think it's an obvious hack. I encountered the fast-speed error even with all identifiable hacks (things marked in dark red in Clean Installer) removed from the game.

I don't think it's the lot, either. I still need to try The Hub again, but with my Downloads folder completely removed, I got what appeared to be a normal visit to a downtown lot. That was late last night--or rather, early this morning. I wanted to go back to one of the known problem lots (The Hub and the Cryp'o'whosis) but the last I remember from last night is my keyboard flying toward my face.

I think I'll take the risk of installing just the Multipainting so that I can refresh the characters before I try again. That will make it easier to get the characters to go downtown.

Oho! In http://www.hullabaloo.simshost.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6220 it says I experienced exactly these same problems with The Hub, the first time I installed Nightlife on September 21, 2005!

That's important. It means that whatever is causing the problems was there then and it's still there. That would imply that any file dated after that date is a less likely suspect.

I knew there was a reason for posting the details of these adventures!
