It would have been impressive as it sailed out of port but one hit from an incendiary bomb and it would be a Really Bad Day.

Maybe if it had been built late in WWII after the Japanese could no longer launch a ship or an airplane, it would have been effective in the final campaign. The range of the Allied airplanes was a critical factor in those missions.

The Brits had the idea to use them both for hunting U-boats in Atlantic and as floating islands to attack Japan. These boats would take years to melt in the tropics. The wood pulp need to make them would take most of what the paper industry in the US produces in year. I don't know if it is one ship or a few. The Spruce Goose of Aircraft Carriers, in my opinion, is the USS Akron, a Zeppelin planed to be used as an aircraft carrier.

It certainly would have been awesome if they'd ever built those things. I think for a warship they would have wanted something more robust than a wooden hull, though.

We learned the hard way (in the Falkland Islands war) that even aluminum isn't a good idea. Warships need to be built of incredibly thick, strong materials with very high combustion temperatures. That would be steel. Or maybe concrete.

The Habakkuks, you could fire torpedoes till you run out, it will still float. At a meeting of British naval brass, one office pulled out a brick size chunk of pykrete and shot at it with a pistol. The chunk was virtually undamaged!
