Yeah, that one was a visual joke, not a phonetic one.

That's the right pronuntation. Chica means "girl" in Spanish, my native language.

It wasn't chica that Marmy was mispronouncing, it was "Chee-KWA-go." Grin

Wells-Fargo started as a stagecoach/cargo company in pioneering days.

Another reference... The Music Man, "The Wells Fargo wagon is a'comin' down the street..."

Since none of us are unfortunate enough to have lived in Illinois, we'll take your word on that one...

Hey, don't go dissin' Illy-Noise! lol

Actually, there are several dialects in the city of Chicago alone, and one of them does pronounce it sort of like chee-kwa-go. Other folks call it shih-kaggy. The more literate populace (and everybody else in the world) still pronounce it the way you would expect: shih-CAH-go. It's sort of like the multitudinous dialects to be found in greater New York City, though less geographically distinct.

I've often wondered which is closest to the original Illini Indian word that gave the city its name.

FWIW, I've never lived in or near Chicago. Peoria, Galesburg, and Urbana were my home from latter grade school through college.

And speaking of city names (here's one that Ghostman will appreciate), how the heck did Peoria get that name? I suspect that it is not rooted in Espaņol!

Rolling on the Floor Laughing There's is a city named Peoria? First time I've ever heard of that. Oh goodness ! either someone was on drugs when giving that city a name or it's not based on spanish.

hehe....almost all of the Texas towns have spanish origins.....even the streets. Manchacha (pronounced man-cha-ka) and Mexia (Meh-hay-ah). Lots of german ones as well... Bourne (burn-ee) and Greune (green). Then there's the obvious ones like Amarillo (don't know why it's named that....it's not yellow around there and Texans pronounce it ama-rill-o and not ama-ree-yo like the spanish do)

I do know a little spanish, but not much.
