Man, the spammers are really getting thick! Or one just happened to come by and spam under three different names. Time to turn on some extra human-verification in the BBS? (Or are they using low-paid real humans rather than bots to post these things nowadays?)

We already require the human pattern-recognition gizmo and email address verification, but I'm a few revs behind in maintaining the board so the spammers might have found a way around these things.

My fear is that they'll start (or have started) hiring rooms full of people in countries with low labor costs to do this by hand; hard to defend against that without keeping out real non-spamming people!

(Although really it's hard for me to believe that the return from these idiotic spam posts is enough even to pay minimum wage in Elbonia...)

I saw those too. And I just saw one last night, and then in the morning other two. First time I see that much spam here.

I've noticed it a lot lately, and then three the past day or so, one of which was pretty offensive. I too was wondering if it was really humans or if it was some auto-crawler thingamabob that knows a way around the system.

We had quite a spate of them a while ago, all from *.ru domains, so now we are blocking all those domains. Unless someone has figured out a way to automate recognition of those funny images and responding to the email that the system sends, they're doing this manually. At the very least it means they have to be using an email address that is valid at the time they do this.

It might not even be done by people trying to make money from it. Since it can't be cost-effective to try to spend ten minutes earning 1/10 of a cent from a click-through, it's likely that it's people who do these things because they enjoy annoying people.

If you do spot a spam, never respond to it, and never click on any links they post. Just send me a PM with a link to the thread and I'll blow 'em away.

Lol! Congratulations!

Never click on one of their links because they can tell where they get hits from, and they'll come back and put up more stupid posts.

If you absolutely must see one of their sites, copy the link, open a new browser window, and paste.

Yeah, what Rose said. It's best not to visit advertisted sites at all because then spammers won't get paid. If they don't get paid, then maybe they'll find less destructive ways to make money.

If you're curious about a site, try stripping the URL back to the domain name. Usually the spammer's ID is embedded in the URL. They get paid by the number of click-throughs that show a particular ID.

We had a new one a couple of days ago: A spammer posted a list of jokes that's going around the net with a dozen links to advertisements embedded in the post. Some folks even replied about how funny the jokes were.

You mean those links that actually have nothing between the and , so they're basically invisible and unclickable?

What do spammers get out of those?

Yup, those ones.

My first guess would be that they are hoping that someone will click the links. There's also the possibility that they are trying to boost their standing in the Google search engine by having lots of sites linking to their site.

Or, it could just be a jerk being a jerk, trying to put one over on us. Ya never know.

It's gotta be the Google thing, because there's nothing to click!

Like this:

Can you find the link to my site?
