Many many many things have happened to me and my family over the past few years, during which I have gone through quite a few transformations etc...
At this point, my former nic as ShamenGoddess, really does not "fit" quite right anymore and no longer serves me, so here I am as Hedge Witch Grin

p.s.
Hope I don't cause too much confusion, my apologies if I do! Grin

And hopefully you'll still be as nice and pleasant as usual. Any particular reason you chose that new name?

I find myself wondering what a "hedge witch" might be, other than the obvious definition: a hedge witch is what Thera is. It invokes mental images of pixies doing arcane things in boxwood hedges. Grin

A hedge witch is a magical practitioner specializing in natural type magics, as opposed to a Sorcerer who tampers with fundamental forces.

At least that's my understanding of the term...

My mental pixies just grew up, lost their wings, and put some clothes on. Darn. I kinda liked 'em the way they were.

House Shadow Drake's definition:
Quote:
A Hedgewitch is a path within a tradition that is somewhat shamanic in nature, for lack of a better term. There are many different titles that those who follow this inner tradition are called.

These are the ones who engage in spirit flight, and journey into the Otherworld. It is this inner path that utilizes such things as flying salves and potions in order to gain access to the Otherworld. However, there are certain prerequisites that must be met before one can learn this particular path.

A Hedgewitch is able to go into the Otherworld, and call back the souls of those who are about to die. They can, in this capacity, be very powerful healers. They are also able to speak with those who have passed beyond.

A bird of one kind or another is usually associated with the hedge path. Two of the most commonly associated birds are the raven and the goose.

A mention should be made that the hedge signified the boundary of the village. The fence or hedge represents the boundary that exists between this world and the spiritual realm. Not all cultures had hedges, though. Some had stone wall, or earthen works. Regardless, this term is adopted as a way to commonly identify these path.

It should be emphasized that not all Witches follow this specific path.

Wikipedia's Definition
Quote:
Hedgewitchery is a path, usually within the context of the traditional path of witchcraft, and which (as stated above), perhaps once used psychotropic herbs and mushrooms to achieve a trance state, compared to those who use blood control and dancing to achieve the same desire

Modern Wiccan/Neo-pagan Definition
A Hedgewitch is a solitary witch, not necessarily Wiccan. Generally unconcerned with overly formal magical workings, preferring more simple, folk magic. Often a herb worker, working for healing of self and others.
Shamanic practice is common, and sometimes considered the hallmark of a hedgewitch. From this perspective, the hedge is the border between a village and the wilderness - the hedgwitch walks the border with a foot in both worlds.

In physical terms, it was the hedge that separated the town from the wilderness. Crossing the hedge was considered dangerous, due to the fact that the forest was regarded as a locus of uncanny happenings including witchcraft. To the hedgewitch and witches alike, the hedge was not thought to be a physical boundary but a mental barrier to be crossed in trance work. It is the line you have drawn between what is “this world” and the “next” and between what is “reality” and “dream."

As for the pixies...they are there, in the boxwoods, wings and all but usually on a full moon!!! Grin

I just classify myself as an eclectic pagan at the moment...haven't really settled on a specific path yet.
