Well, there's a big discussion on the other thread about ep compatibility... so here's the big question...

Actually, don't think too hard... just mark the last pack you've got instead of trying to second guess the downloaders...

I have Uni and NL, but I don't really like NL's features.

In order to make it compatible with the base game and uni only...wouldn't you have to uninstall your expansion packs just to make the lots? I'm not sure I like the idea THAT well to do that.

Don't go by me alone though, as with my dial-up there is no way I could download such a neighborhood anyway due to the file sizes involved. To upload a large house file to my web site alone can take all night...that is if it doesn't time out so I have to make repeat attempts.

Well if it was made using Uni then anyone else who had Uni, even if they had NL or OFB as well, could use it. It's like the houses - they are forward-compatible not backward-compatible.

For making the houses yes, they would need to take their EP/s out. That's notwhere near as hard with Sims 2 as it was in Sims 1.

I've done it several times, till I finally sussed out an easier way. Back up your Hoods first. (I just relabel the Sims 2 folder in EAGames to Sims2 NL all DLs playing. Then go to control panel and uninstall that EP.
Now run the game and you have a clean set of Pleasantview, Verona and that other one. Anything you make now will be completely compatible.

But I think that an alternative to the whole hood download is to do the terrain and houses and sims separately - they would be much smaller. I don't know how big the actual Hood files would be - I will have try it out and get back to you.

If it's any help at all, mine range from 31 MB (Happy Valley, lush terrain, no sub-neighbourhoods, relatively unoccupied) to 250 MB (Enderby, lush terrain, 1 Downtown & 1 Uni, densely populated (in comparison))

Am I reading that if you make a neighborhood with no expansion packs installed, you can't read it if you have University or Nightlife?

I think there's a way to force your game to update an older neighborhood, but I don't remember it...

It's something like going into the lots and saving, I think.

No, any Hood, or Lot, you make with any LOWER EP can be played by a LATER EP, opened and played - but the process is not reversible. Once played with NL can't play it with TS2.

In that case I'd say that it would be smart to make the bits fit the least common denominator. The neighborhood terrain could be the base game.

Lots should be the simplest game that you can make. Unless you have two machines that can run The Sims 2 (which I don't) then you're probably stuck with whatever you have installed.

Terrain, if it is just terrain, IS base game by definition.

If you decorate it then it becomes a bigger download and then I guess would ideally be Sims 2 so that it would be playable with anything after. And once you add Townies it gets quite a bit bigger.

But I found a way to have both installed Greg - I use a registry fidge. I have actually three separate installations now, cheers Sims 2, Sims2 with Uni and Sims 2 with Uni and NL. I DO have a pc with a large drive and that helps, and I have most of my DLs only in the NL one, as that's the one I mostly PLAY. The others are nice for making stuff, and of course load faster too.

I didn't post the registry fidge because I know fiddling in there c an be dodgy but am happy to explain to anyone that wants to know how. (It took me a solid week's work to make it!)

I think I tried to explain that in PM and scared the poop out of Greg...

While it doesn't exactly cause incontinence problems, the idea of messing with the Windows registry is rather scary. I have enough grief with the furshlugginer thing that I'm reluctant to mess further with it.

shocked Yup, it's very scary. But it is feasible, if you are careful not to mess with anything else. And I had been wanting to do it since I got Uni; I had the advantage that I had seen it done for Sims 1.

(tries not to think about the scenario Rose conjures up) confused
