Hyglum
Preface and Reprise

In the 134th year of Happy Valley, the members of our most heroic family were completely absorbed in learning of their origins and exploring their newly gained knowledge of how to transit between universes. They sought new knowledge in their quest to understand the strange advent of noble elves and drow in the neighboring community of Bonnyview Shores, with hopes that they might also learn that they could do something about it.

Unbeknownst to them, a supervillain had arisen in Happy Valley, in the person of one Miss Narcissa Sapphos. At that time, the famous superhero and matron of Happy Valley society, Sheba was in another universe, visiting Her extended family in a place called Baumdoubt Valley while in Happy Valley Her husband was caring for Her children with the assistance of Her friend and wife of two universes, Dallas Geieffies.

They were aware that Bonnyview Shores was host to an enigmatic race of copper-blooded aliens, as was the neighboring community of Strangetown located far out west in the desert beyond the mountains. What they didn't know was that down an oft-overlooked back road through the desert those same aliens were attempting to establish an exclusive community of their own.

The aliens called their new community Hyglum.

Chapter 1: Origins

Let's begin at the beginning.

A dozen billion years ago, in an obscure backwater out toward the rim of a nascent medium-sized galaxy, a string of unimaginably large and bright stars lived out their short, tumultuous lives. At the end of their run, the first of them died in a tremendous supernova explosion. As its shock wave reached its neighbors, they, too, exploded. It would have been an amazing sight to human eyes, but there was no one there to enjoy the show except for the Creator and His entourage as the supernovae went off like a string of firecrackers.

They noticed, of course, and They cheered and wondered in Their own way, but to Them this was but one of many fantastic sights to be seen in the fledgling universe. The supernova explosions were just part of the backdrop of the main event at that time, which was the collsion between two supergalaxies, one made entirely of antimatter. The energy lanes resulting from that interaction were really something worth watching.

Largely unnoticed for the next several billion years, roiling swirls of interstellar dust left over from the supernova death of first-generation stars coalesced into massive balls of glowing gas. As the dust gathered, pressure at the core of these gas balls grew until once again, hydrogen fusion was kindled and two new stars were born. These baby stars were locked in a dance separated by a distance greater than that between our sun and the planet Saturn today.

This binary star system was surrounded by a ring nebula, while between and around the two stars more swirls of gas condensed to form planets.

Of particular interest to us, and to the denizens of Happy Valley and its environs, was a barren, rocky planet that formed in an orbit just over 100 million miles from the larger of these two stars. That planet had quite tempestuous weather in its early days, and in the aftermath of cooling rains were left behind large lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains covering nearly one-fourth of its surface. It was a very promising planet, but at that time, alas, there was no life.

A billion years after the first kindling of those twin stars, another star condensed from remnants of the supernovae just over four light-years away. Companion stars attempted to form with this new light in the heavens, but were unable to attain sufficient mass to fuse hydrogen at their core and so were destined to live their lives as gas giant planets.

This newcomer, too, had rocky planets. On the largest of those rocky planets, in a nearly circular orbit 93 million miles out from the star, in a tidal pool a the edge of the planet's great ocean, a replicator formed from the detritus of those long-ago supernovae. It was a relatively simple organic molecule, just another humdrum nucleic acid among billions of the things, but this little molecule was very special. It made copies of itself. Life had come to this infinitesimal speck of cosmic dust.

Another billion years passed. This tiny planet was playing host to a series of ever-more-interesting life forms when it was struck by another rocky planet that was wandering in a highly elliptical orbit. The result explosion was cataclysmic, at least on a planetary scale. Life was almost snuffed out as quickly as it had begun, but it held on. Bits of planetary material, bearing with a huge collection of those same self-replicating molecules, were flung out into the cosmos. Some of the debris formed a ring around the planet which eventually was to condense into a very large moon. Other bits traveled on in an expanding cloud, beyond the boundries of the star, to drift out into interstellar space.

Millions of years later, a minuscule part of that debris cloud rained down upon the planets of the older binary star system. There, just one of self-replicating molecules found conditions exactly right, and commenced to reproduce itself. While in the neighboring system its brethren found iron in abundance and developed an internal chemistry based on transporting oxygen with iron, this replicator latched onto copper as the catalyst in its reducing chemistry. And so it grew.

Chapter 2: Across the Void

The replicator replicated, and a multitude of species spread across the face of the planet. Owing to their internal chemistry, their skin took on a greenish appearance beneath their fur. One learned to rear up on its hind legs, so that it could raise its primary scan platform higher, the better to search for such interesting items as food, mates, and predators.

That creature learned to clothe itself and adapted to all the climates of the planet. It shed its fur, except for spots where that fur would prove useful for personal identification and to guide the attention potential mates to the important parts. It grew in intelligence, and with intelligence came wonder.

They developed language and named everything they knew. In particular, they named themselves the Andultod and their planet became Ka'andultod. Rival hives of Andultod grew, and they fought their wars and they built their universities and they invented commerce and agriculture, and eventually their wondering minds drove them to invent space travel.

The Andultod sent out their star probes and learned that life also existed on a watery planet that circled their system's next-door neighboring star. They sent more powerful probes and learned that a species of large mammals, much like themselves, had spread across the face of the planet. Eventually, they sent their own people to that planet to learn what there was to learn. Their scientists speculated that those large mammals, so similar to themselves, might be able to reproduce with them.

The scientists were right.

They also learned that the dominant intelligent species of that other planet largely avoided the areas that were most like their own Ka'andultod, preferring to live nearer the greater basins of water and their tributary channels, and even right on the shores of those terrifying oceans. After a few initial forays, they learned that these strange xenophilic mammals would, mostly, welcome them into their societies. They elected to establish a city there, in a spot where those humans had shown no interest in living.

They found a small lake fed by underground springs out in the deep desert near the place where they had first met the humans, a place the humans called Hoomlauteproot, Strangetown. The dry terrain with its tiny lake, so reminiscent of Ka'andultod, was so very beautiful with its sandy soil and bright sunlight, but it was shunned by the humans. For these reasons, it was here that they decided to establish their own community.

Hyglum, The Beginning

First they flew their planetary craft low to the ground with the drive pointed straight down, sprinkling hydrocarbons to be sintered with the soil to form transportation lanes. Roads, they were called in this place. They used local materials to build their Place of Exchanging so that their new community might have a commercial center, and even found some youngling humans who were willing to staff the place in exchange for small amounts of human specie.

Next they built the place of hording for dihydrogen monoxide so that the stuff of life need not be wasted any more than is necessary on this strange planet. And finally, they built a dwelling place for the first poonnchokk who would establish their hives on this new planet.

Chapter 3: The Poonnchokk

While on Earth the Andultod construction crews were busily laying out the new city, back on Ka'andultod an Andultod known only as The Hive Queen was interviewing candidate poonnchokk. The poonnchokk* would become her representatives on this new planet. Each of the poonnchokk would eventually become the queen to her own hive, but by swearing fealty to their matron on Ka'andultod, they would expand The Hive Queen's family and increase her stature in all of Ka'andultod society.

After many rounds of elimination, The Hive Queen at last selected three suitable candidates: Altriputa, Kaelstrud, and Praendl.

The Poonnchokk

She sent this trio to the pollinators, and once it was confirmed that they had bred true, shipped them to Earth with a supply of human garments and equipment, and with a firm admonition that neither they nor their progeny may cross-pollenate with humans. The Hive Queen was quite emphatic about this; she did not want her dynasty contaminated with the genes of those iron-blooded creatures of Earth.

*Poonnchokk translates best into English as a colloquialism meaning fertile young female. One human lexicographer from Bonnyview Shores has attempted a literal translation and deduced that it really means "firm, rounded posterior."

Yup! You might say the situation was seriously hoomlaute!
Or maybe you wouldn't, but the Poonnchokk might!
