Chapter 17: Wilhemina's Modest Moment

At the beginning of the new semester, Wilhemina signed up for Mrs. Grundy's class in Advanced Social Engineering. She wasn't much interested in the class (and thought Mrs. Grundy was an ivory-tower idiot completely divorced from the real word) but she needed a humanities elective. Besides, it was a prerequisite for the class in History and Moral Philosophy that she did want to take both because all the kids said it was a great class and because it was taught by that hunky General Giles Edward Bennett.

Advanced Social Engineering seemed like it would be an easy A if she could just grit her teeth and spout Mrs. Grundy's sophomoric nonsense as required and copy a few quotes from Mrs. Grundy's favorite movie stars in her term paper.

She also worked the visibility ploy, sitting in the front row and making a point of asking at least two questions each day that she knew the befuddled Mrs. Grundy would enjoy answering.

It turned out that the gritting-her-teeth part of it was more difficult than she had anticipated, and Wilhemina learned a lot more than she had bargained for. She achieved new heights of indulgence and patience while suppressing her reaction to the vitriolic class hatred that spewed forth daily from the lectern, to the point that halfway through the semester she was beginning to think that if she could ace this class she might have a future as a diplomat in the State Department.

Even worse, though, was the way Mrs. Grundy scowled at her even as the old biddy delighted in the questions she was asking. Bemoaning the fact that she had not properly researched the professor before signing up for her class, Wilhemina finally started asking around. She wanted to find out why Mrs. Grundy didn't like her.



A little research on the web...


A little research on the web revealed that Mrs. Grundy was Lorna Geieffies Franks's second cousin's great aunt, by marriage. That was enough for Wilhemina to make the connection.

Lorna was, of course, married to Bobby Franks, who was the brother of Tommy Franks. And in turn, Tommy Franks was the primary financier of Happy Valley University's School of Business, which included the Social Sciences department. And that meant that Ophelia Franks selected the professors for that department.

Wilhemina found this to be most perplexing. Why would Ophelia Franks tolerate a twit like Mrs. Grundy at her college? She had one connection that might work. Ophelia's son, Tommy Jr., would probably know. Tommy Jr. was the biggest of the Big Men on Campus, so she didn't want to approach him directly. However, she sat next to Sandra Lund in English Literature class, and Sandra was Tommy Jr's girlfriend.

She could see the Mad Manse just a block away through her dorm room window. It was time to venture over there and get to know those Bennett kids a little better!

She counted on receiving a warm welcome at the Mad Manse and was not disappointed. Those kids lived up to their reputation for hospitality which, if the rumors were true, extended to almost everyone in town except for Brenda's mother.

Wilhemina quickly learned that the twins, Sandra and Wanda, work as a team. The conversation whip-sawed back and forth between them at a dizzying pace, but she was able to piece together some of local gossip while also concluding that they were (a) a group mind, (b) identical right down to the tiny creases around their eyes, and (c) as much in love with each other as they were with their respective boyfriends.

Finally, after learning more than she wanted to know about all their siblings and which of the ladies in town were carrying their father's little baby bombs, she broached the subject of Mrs. Grundy.

"You must have signed up for Advanced Social Engineering," Sandra said. "Don't worry; it's not a graded class. Totally pass-fail."

"But Mrs. Grundy doesn't like me, and I'm afraid I'll fail!"

"No worries there, either," Wanda said. "You can't fail! She flunks almost everybody, but the registrar just reverses the grade on your record unless there's compelling evidence that you didn't even bother to show up for class."



"You can't fail!"


"B'b'but... if there's no grade and you can't fail, why is she even teaching the class?"

"For one, because Tommy's mom--"

"That would be Ophelia Franks."

"Right. Ophelia Franks won't fire her. She refused tenure for her, but she's a distant relative of Ophelia's sister-in-law and Tommy's folks won't put an old lady out on the street. Besides that, Uncle Giles wants students to be exposed to Mrs. Grundy's nutty ideas before he reshapes their heads in his History and Moral Philosophy class. He says it's important to learn just how nutty some people can be, and he has no talent for relating that point himself."

"Whew! That's a relief! I thought I was totally screwing up that class! But still, it's disconcerting to have her glowering at me all the time."

"Oh that," Sandra said. "If it really bothers you, that's something you can get under control, Willy."

"Huh?"

Wanda cleared her throat. "One word: headlamps."

"I'm afraid that's it," Sandra said. "Among her many other hatreds, Mrs. Grundy doesn't like sexy girls, and frankly, m'dear, all the guys in school are drooling over your mammalian attributes. Willy, if you want Mrs. Grundy to like you, wear a bra when you go to her class."



"But I don't even own one!"


"What? But I don't even own one!"

"Didn't your bikini come with a top?"

"The guys used it in their model of a Roman onager."

"The one they used to throw water balloons in the Seige of Whiting Hall?"

"That's the one!"

"I think I have a solution," Wanda said. "We're about the same size, and I'm sure I still have a couple of mine around here somewhere."

With that, the twins rummaged around in the bottom drawers until they finally unearthed a couple of bikini bras, one in blue and one in pink that were a reasonably close match for Wilhemina's favorite sheer blouses.

"There!" Sandra said. "You're all set, Willy! No more worries about Mrs. Grundy!"

"But don't you need them?"

"Nope. Unlike you, I really don't give a flip what Mrs. Grundy thinks of me."

"And besides," Wanda said, "We don't need to take her class. It's just a prerequisiste for Uncle Giles's class, and we had that class over the dinner table, before he ever started teaching it!"

Afterthought, The Sequel: It occurs to me that someone might be wondering what the heck an onager is and why Wilhemina's bikini top might be pressed into service during the construction of a scale model of one, so I went snooping around the net and found a really nice picture of an onager.

Cool, thanks! Good not only for modesty, but for those female Sims who are still wearing the default Maxis skins... *8)

(I'll bet the new outfits will bother Mrs. Grundy nearly as much as the original, though. Undergarments are nearly as bad as bodies!)

I was thinking that the original version might look pretty nice over a skin tone without the naughty bits, but now that I look at it, that blouse turned out so sheer that it would make it obvious that something is missing.
