The Llama and The Cow

You may recall the first appearance of Miss Melanie Kody from this scene from Tales of Happy Valley:

How to Win Friends and Influence Cows

She showed up as the prankster cheerleader from the arch rival of the Fighting Llamas of Happy Valley University--the Contentious Cows of Boveena College. We got her under control by having her join our research group at the dorm.

A little later in the Tales of Happy Valley, we learned that Melanie is the way Melanie is because she suffers from an acute neurosis stemming from the fact that the only clothing she owns is that silly cheerleader costume:

Melanie Kody Sans Cow Costume
You would be contentious, too, if you had to spend your entire life as a frustrated, horny cow.

The Allardice girls were tempted to feed her to the Cow Plant, but decided that Melanie was too cute to meet such an untimely demise. (Besides, they don't have a cow plant and really don't want one.) In the fullness of time, their decision proved to be quite fateful in the lives of the students at Happy Valley University!

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 2: The Sharpes Family

The plot thickens.

Jonah Powers, Roxie Sharpe, and Roxie's brother Edwin

Jonah, Roxie, and Edwin are foreign exchange students who came to study at Happy Valley University from the obscure little country of Maxionia. Roxie met Jonah during her Freshman year at University and the two of them were living together in a house right across Bennett Drive* from the Allardice girls.

Then Roxie's brother Edwin showed up, needing a place to stay.

A communique from Maxionia indicates that Roxie thinks her younger brother is a total dork and fears having to live with him at college. They would have us believe that she took him in only because she had no choice.

Roxie told us an alternative story, however. It seems that her personal proclivities didn't fit well with the dictates of the social engineers in the oppressive left-wing regime that rules Maxionia, and they made up this silly story because they were unwilling to acknowledge her free-spirited nature.

Free At Last! Jonah and Edwin Escape from Maxionian Schlubbosity!

Free from the watchful eye of the Maxionian Thought Police, Jonah quickly shed his protective disguise as a schlub and even Edwin cleaned up his act a bit. In contrast, Roxie found that her counter-culture garb fit right in with some segments of HVU society and decided to stick with it, even the silly hat.

As it turns out, Roxie has little time for her ostensible boyfriend. She lives with him at college for economic reasons and to provide a cover story for the Maxionian social busybodies, but here in Happy Valley she can finally acknowledge that, in fact, she likes girls.

Despite what we would believe from the Maxionian communique, Roxie's amorous interests have all been young females--with one notable exception. Far from thinking of her brother Edwin as a dork...

Roxie and Edwin
Often this silly game presents challenges that are difficult to explain in a back story!
This little surprise was one of the biggest challenges we've run across yet!

... she is actually inordinately fond of him.

For his part of it, Edwin is happy that his big sister appreciates him. Mostly Roxie leaves him to pursue his studies while she pursues all the co-eds at the university. And at least he can talk to his sister about girls!

This course does not set well with the notions of the Maxionian Bureau of Social Engineering, but it does give us a clue that the Sharpes kids are not what they might seem to be. Despite their upbringing in an oppressive society, they tend to be very open-minded about things.

Their very open-mindedness eventually plays a key role in the tale of The Llama and The Cow.

*The Bennett girls built the first house in town so they got to name the street.

Chapter 3: Roxie's Money Machine

Roxie Checks Out Her Staff While the Fireman Waits His Turn

Roxie struck out so many times with the local co-eds that she decided to invest all of her money to get a brothel started in the basement. At least that way she'd be assured that there would be somebody around who was willing to do things she wanted to do.

She started out with one working girl. The business proved to be so lucrative that soon she was able to add another, and then two more. Soon her little sideline had earned so much money that she was able to add on to the little house.

Roxie Added a Performing Arts Wing to the House and Built Onto the Second Floor

After all the construction, the house was big enough that it could accommodate a much larger family even with the constant traffic visiting the business in the basement.

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 4: Jonah and Christy

Jonah Wonders About the Black Door

Not surprisingly all this activity raised considerable concern in Jonah's mind. It was bad enough, putting up with a girlfriend who wouldn't put out. Now he had two more things to wonder about. First, there's the fact that Roxie is spending so much time in the basement. And then there's this odd extra door to Edwin's room, to which only Roxie had a key.

He liked the improvements Roxie made to the house. With a perpetual party going in the new wing, college professors would hang around for hours. That made it really easy for him to become a Big Man on Campus even if he couldn't be a Big Man on Roxie.

Eventually he grew weary of Roxie's odd behavior and decided that it would be a good idea to start looking around again. He decided to give up this whole "romance" thing that Roxie had talked him into and find out if his life would be better pursuing a more normal course of existence.

It was late in his Sophomore year and a whole new crop of Freshman girls had moved to college. Most of them were already betrothed to their high school sweethearts, but there are always a few girls who arrive at school with no strings attached. Besides, he was only looking for one girl; preferably someone a bit less strange than Roxie.

Perserverance pays off, and soon he found his match, in the person of one Miss Christy Stratton.

Christy Makes Her Interest Clear to Jonah

It was a whirlwind romance. Not long after she first met Jonah, Christy evicted Roxie and staked her own claim to Jonah.

Christy Stakes Her Claim

Not the least bit disappointed by this turn of events, Roxie decided to stop pretending that she isn't weird and simply moved in with Edwin.

So now Jonah is happy to have Christy. Roxie is happy to be openly weird. Edwin is pretty much clueless. And as for Christy, she doesn't mind having weird housemates as long as she has Jonah!

Now, this was before Christy learned just how weird things could get here at Sharpe House!

There were at least three different characters in the game named Christy Stratton before I started renaming them. This is Christy Stratton the College Student, not to be confused with Christy Stratton the M.D. or Christy Stratton the College Professor.

I have a question for ya, Greg......do you just pretty much let your Sims go on autopilot so that they do the crazy stuff they do, or are you orchestrating it? My Sims are never weird, never have affairs, etc. In a nutshell, they are pretty darn boring. I gotta change this!!!

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 5: Rapacious Ruminants

The house was growing and the attic was filled with fun toys. It quickly became party central for Happy Valley University, with the folks rockin' in the attic all through the night.

People would come to visit Roxie's business in the basement and then stick around for more fun. Even college professors became buskers in the never-ending party.

This kind of environment tends to attract cheerleaders, so of course it wasn't long before our own dear cow, Melanie Kody, started hanging out with the kids at HVU. She would arrive with mischief on her mind, so we distracted her by putting her to work playing the bass most nights.

All was going well until one night, just after Melanie had collected her tips, another mascot arrived. That was, of course, Paul Thayer* in his Flighting Llama costume.

The Llama and The Cow Mix It Up in the Attic
They're in there somewhere! Really!

It had to happen. The moment she saw The Llama, Melanie attacked with tooth and nail. (Or at least with horn and hoof!)

The battle raged for quite some time. People were cheering for the llama, of course, and some were even making side bets, but the outcome was inevitable.

Paul the Llama was a popular guy on campus and he especially liked to hang out at houses that had swimming pools. By the time he got into this fight he had maximized his body score and had a perfect physique. Melanie never stood a chance.

In the course of the fight, Paul shredded Melanie's cow costume and suddenly discovered that he was fighting a girl!

Melanie Experiences the Agony of Defeat

A girl! The Cow is a girl! A very pretty, and very naked, girl! Paul was taken aback, startled with surprise and smitten with her beauty.

Melanie emerged from the fight bruised, battered, defeated and in an unclad state that was sure to attract the attention of the Sepulchral Censor Snake. Swearing that she would never again challenge the Fighting Llama, she ran off into the night.

But that is not the end of the story of The Llama and The Cow. Oh, no, not by a long shot! It's only the beginning!

*Paul is Meadow's brother. You've probably met his sister as an NPC teenager in town.

I usually just let them do their own thing, pushing them here and there to keep their motives and aspirations up; and in the case of college students, to keep their grades up. I like to have them saturate their college effort scores right after they take their finals so that they can have the rest of the time to get into mischief.

Then when they do something weird, such as Roxie coming on to her brother (which admittedly surprised the heck out of me!), I push that story line to see where it takes them.

There were a lot of weird things happening in the Sharpe household so I thought it was worth it grab some screen shots and tell the tale.

Obviously Roxie did not autonomously build a brothel in the basement. That was pretty much a desparation move on my part. Roxie is a Maxian "Romance" sim with a very strong bias toward females. She was making a nuisance of herself, coming on to all the girls, and at the same time wrecking her relationship with her ostensible boyfriend. She was rapidly approaching a desparate condition in her aspirations so it was Danny's hookers to the rescue!

Roxie seriously offended Sandra, one of Gregsim's daughters. I intervened there because if it had come to a fight, Sandra (body level 10 and a military cadet background) would have beaten the sugar out of her and I might have lost one of the most interesting characters in my game. I left that out of this story because I didn't have any screen shots, and besides, Roxie's tale is really just back story for The Llama and The Cow.

I wish I had grabbed a screen shot of Melanie playing the bass in her cow costume. At the time, though, I was just trying to keep her out of mischief while I was watching Roxie chase all the girls. (And repeatedly getting shot down.)

Melanie's attack on Paul was autonomous. I hadn't even noticed that Paul had shown up at the party until she launched into him. I had taken control of Melanie long enough to get her playing the bass but after that had been pretty much ignoring that part of the party.

That's when I realized that Melanie and Paul were the real story in this household and pushed things a bit; but that's getting ahead of the tale!

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 6: If You Can't Beat 'Em...

Melanie Tries to Sneak Up on Paul Again

Paul showed up at the house again the next day. While he was having fun cheering and pouring money into the busker jars, Roxie decided to stir things up by inviting Melanie over.

As soon as she saw Paul, Melanie tried to sneak up on him, but this time he saw her coming. Fortunately, she'd learned from her mistake and didn't attack him this time.

Ticklefest!

Instead, she tickled him!

Now that Paul had seen what's under the cow costume, he appreciated the attention. Things began to warm up between these two domesticated ruminants.

No Animosities Here!

They started joking with each other, and soon were swapping compliments and gossip. It became obvious that the war between The Llama and The Cow was over. But how far can this relationship go?

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 7: Things Are Going Swimmingly

A little later, Paul followed the lure of the swimming pool to get in a few laps. Her interest piqued, Melanie followed him out to the pool and dove in.

After padding around for a while, she caught him by the side of the pool.

"Gerbits! Gerbits! Go-o-o-o Gerbits!"

So, how else would you expect a couple of cheerleaders to entertain each other? They gossiped and joked by the pool and then after a few more cheers, things began to get more serious for these arch-rivals!

Fraternizing With the Enemy

Fueled by the passions of youth and relief from their former deep-rooted animosity, such osculatory adventures quickly lead to the inevitable.

Menage a Mascot

Melanie's microscopic bikini might have helped things along here.

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 8: Paul's Ploy

Something to Really Cheer About!

They both immediately developed an aspiration that could only be satisfied by hastily constructing a spare bedroom on the second floor. Fortunately, the household could afford it because Roxie had made so much money from her brothel.

This, of course, continued along the path of inevitability.

Young Cheerleaders in Love

In fact, they spent most of the afternoon inevitabling, oblivious to all else in the world.

While Melanie Sleeps, Paul Sneaks Out

Paul had an ulterior motive, though. After he had Melanie thoroughly happy and even more thoroughly exhausted, he left her snoozing away and sneaked out to set off all the fire sprinklers at Boveena College!

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 9: Of Cows and Crystalline Carbon

Same Cow, Different Day
Paul got a face lift. Can you tell?

The next day, Paul came by looking for Melanie. He caught up with her just as she was about to head for the diving board.

From the bent of his ears, she could tell that he had something in mind.

He Knows What's Under that Cow Costume!

Of course, he had that on his mind, but Melanie was soon to learn that he had an even bigger surprise in store!

The Llama Pops the Question: "Smeernah!"*

In unprecedented show of intermural harmony, Paul reached into a secret pocket in his tail and presented Melanie with a sparkler only slightly smaller than Manhattan!

The Cow Accepts

Melanie accepted his proposal without any hestitation, and finally The Llama and The Cow became engaged!

Now, Roxie was watching all this through her bedroom window. The happy couple would need a place to live, so she ran out and invited both of them to live at Sharpe House. The house would need some more remodeling to accommodate the cheerleaders but thanks to the Basement Brigade, they had a huge cash surplus available.

*That's llamaspeak for: "Want a chunk of gravel, m'dear?"

The Llama and The Cow
Chapter 10: On the Site of the Fight

The Llama and The Cow Mark Their Territory

As soon as the construction crew had the place ready, Paul and Melanie posted their claim to the twin doors to their new room. How romantic! Their bed is sited on the same spot where they had their first fight.

Oddly, Paul's door portrait shows his Fighting Llama costume but Melanie's shows just Melanie, au naturel. We might speculate that this indicates that she has changed loyalties. In fact, Melanie registered for school at Happy Valley University where she entered the Drama curriculum in the College of Performing Arts. Paul is majoring in Physics.

However, in truth, Melanie just wants Paul to have a constant reminder of what he's getting.

Cheerleaders At Play

Melanie thought it would be kinky to try out their new bed while wearing their team mascot costumes. She said something about Paul getting to do what he's been trying to do to Boveena College for months.

The Llama and The Cow, Together Again

One might think that the costumes would prove to be a significant encumbrance to such activities, but for these two it's just part of the adventure!

Gerbits! Gerbits! Go-o-o-o Gerbits!

And indeed, they did manage, somehow! The details of this excursion to Cupid's Grove will remain forever their own personal secret.

And so, that brings us to the close of the Comedy of The Llama and The Cow. Well, except for one thing...

There He Goes Again!

Melanie is asleep again, and there are still a few fire sprinklers left at Boveena College!

The Llama and The Cow
Intermezzo: The Case of the Disappearing Llama

The Population of Sharpe House Has Doubled Since the Day the Maxionians Moved In
This did all this without a single money cheat!

Among the many peculiarities of Sharpe House is the appearance of Melanie and Paul in both the neighborhood view and the active house view.

Here in the neighborhood screen, Paul shows up in his Fighting Llamas cheerleader costume while Melanie's appearance matches her dorm door portrait--wearing a terrific tan, a devastating smile, and nought else.

In game play, Melanie appears as a fully playable character with the same portrait as the one on her dorm door. Paul, however, does not have an icon in normal play. This is easily overcome by using Merola's Mind Control Mirror any time we want him to do something, but nevertheless intriguingly strange.

You have already met the other denizens of Sharpe House. That's Edwin Sharpe on the left and his sister (and roommate) Roxie in the hat. Jonah Powers is the guy in the sweater and tennis shoes, and that's Jonah's girlfriend Christy Stratton smouldering on the ground.

Also in this view you can see the back of the Goddard Engineering Building. Note that I have not yet finished populating the engineering building with windows.

In the latest odd development, Roxie has developed an obsession with going Greek (another peculiar desire, considering her orientation, but Roxie reserves the right to pursue weirdness to the fullest) and so has Melanie (who can guess what what going on in that dust cloud?) on a college campus that has no Greek houses.

Christy hasn't been thinking much about going Greek but, although her aspiration is Knowledge, she has developed a permanent desire to woohoo with Jonah. She is easily satisfied, but she doesn't stay satisfied for longer than two spins of the slot machine. That makes it easy to keep her in a platinum mood!

And speaking of slut machines--which we weren't but it's a bad pun worthy of dishonorable mention--they built this house entirely from funds earned by Roxie's Basement Business augmented by a continuous stream of college professors dumping money into their busker jars. All six of the kids have an A+ rating in school and four of them have already maxed the Creativity skill.

Map orientation: This neighborhood is based on that Maxian college town, Le Tour; however, the street names and building locations are all different. Sharpe House faces onto McGowan Street. The Goddard Engineering Building is on Kings Way, across from King's Music Hall. Most of the children of the Happy Valley star line live in the homes on Bennett Drive, which runs along the west side of the Sharpe property. McGowan Street runs right into the front door on the Allardice girls' house (off screen) on Bennett Drive. The Addison boys have the house right at the jog, and the next house to the north is the home of the Franks boys. The empty lot north of the Franks place is the home of a new set of college kids, the Kilimanjaros, and then you can see just the first floor of Manse Orleans Collegiate Edition, the Bennett girls' home away from home.

All possible puns and double entendres intended, including the ones we didn't think of.
