The Thing in the Attic

In this thread, Mage asked how to build attics. After some reflection I thought an example would serve us well, so I built 213 N Franks Ranch Road, which in my mind immediately became the House of Too Many Gables.
Grin

My goal was to push the limits of building attics, both to show how to do it and to find out how far we can go in creating usable space. If anyone is interested, I'll post a full tutorial showing how I built this house from the ground up.

In the next message I'll show a preview where we take a peek under the roof.

213 Franks Ranch Road with the Roof Down

As you can see from this image, I was able to build three levels of accessible floors above the main floor. The house also has a full basement below the main floor, giving a total of five levels of accessible floor. (I don't have University installed so I'm limited to what you can to with the original version of The Sims 2.)

The area covered by Smitty's Distressed Floorboards is not accessible to sims because the roof is too low. Note that these areas cover the first 3 squares from the edge beneath a sloping roof.

The area enclosed by walls is accessible living space, with one exception--at the top of the pyramid there's a one-square-wide corridor. I couldn't get the game to run a stair to that area.

The base of the pyramid is 19 squares wide (from the front of the house to the back). It looks like if you want that third tier of the attic to have useful space, the base of the roof needs to be even wider, perhaps as much as 22 squares.

I also learned that although you can build walls on the 2nd and 3rd tiers, you cannot put windows on the end caps of the gabled roof. I could only get the game to put a window on the first tier. You can probably get around this by building the pyramid one piece at time: Build a rectagle of normal walls up to 3 spaces from the edge on each tier, then fill in the roof with the sloping roof section.
