Just to supplement Greg's "faboo" tutorial (http://hullabaloo.simshost.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4473) on basements, I thought I'd add my .02 and show how I learned to make basements. Sometimes seeing more than one way to approach something makes things a bit easier to learn, so here we go:

Admin Edit: All the images in this tutorial were removed from the net, so I've deleted the tutorial; however, the ensuing discussions are very informative and you will find the download for the 16 Stripes Wall in this topic.

Aha! That's one I never thought of -- just paint a wall on the basement to find the proper level. Very clever!

Thanks guys, appreciate it! Glad to know you both like it . . . =)

I can't tell you how long I struggled with basements until one day "out of desperation" I was browsing through the walls, found that particular stucco one with the "trim" and thought it might make a decent depth guide. Before trying this out, I would start a basement and after so many failures at placing steps, I'd give up and do something else, then try again another time (which always led to the same session of frustration! lol).

You could make a custom wall paper with nothing but a red line just at the floor and a series of arrows pointing down...

Easy enough. smile

16 Stripes Wall - 4K (tiny)
SimsHost subscribers can click on the image to download from The Sims 2 at SimsHost

There are 16 evenly-spaced stripes so each stripe is exactly one click of the shovel tool high. Just keep digging until you strike gold!

Edit: I replaced the .package file with a .Sims2Pack file because I'm not sure that walls can be distributed in a .package file.

In actual practice, I've found that I use the 16-stripes wall a lot!

I've gotten into the habit building basements under my old houses (now that I've learned that I can) so it makes it really quick to find the correct level.

On the other hand, I still don't use the basements for anything except storing junk. :dodge:

You mean you haven't filled them up with Danny's NPCs and a brothel to support the whole household?

Thanks! As it turns out, I use that wall for almost every basement I build these days. If I just have the foundation, I can still use the stair trick but everywhere else I just go mining for gold!
