Happy Valley University
Chapter 1: Campus Improvements, Sheba Style

It all started, as so many things do in Happy Valley, with a phone call between She and Ophelia Franks. We'll skip the details of the conversation, where they discussed the intricacies of pregnancy and other matters left to the realm of girl talk, and get straight to the meat of the matter: They decided that the university's library and science facilities were abysmally inadequate for the growing student population. They intensely disliked the student union, built as it was on a site of an old two-story strip mall, but that could wait.

Mouse over the image to see which campus building is which.
Clicking on the image is really quite unrewarding.

On-campus housing was going well, thanks primarily to Tommy Franks's investments in new dorms and residence halls. Greg had already donated the Goddard Engineering Building and the Phineas Green Science Building, but the students needed a new chemistry lab. Ophelia determined that her husband Tommy was suddenly going to decide to donate a new chem lab, and this time he'd give it their family name.

She, in turn, worried that the old library was already loaded to the gunwhales and stacks were stacked so closely that it was becoming dangerous to peruse the university's collection. So Her husband would decide that he just had to donate a new undergraduate library--a huge facility that would be a hall of learning and development all by itself and, like Ophelia, She thought it was finally time to stop indulging his whim of name buildings after his heroes and give some credit to the family fortune.

Bennett Undergraduate Library
Under construction. Status as of GD 117.

Finally, they both thought the kids needed something better than an open field to hold the intercollegiate kicky bag games. Week after week, month, after month, year after year, the Contentious Cows of Boveena College would come to be trounced yet again by the Fighting Llamas on a muddy field with a few port-a-privvies and a temporary lemonade stand. Thus was born the Gerbits Stadium, which would be a collaborative effort between the Frankses and the Bennetts.

After an intense period of constuction on campus, part of their plans had already come to fruition. On GD 117 (quite a bit later than the current chapter of Tales of Happy Valley) climbed into the helicopter to have a good look at how their projects were progress. Ophelia took these snapshots as souvenirs of their mischief, which (with Ophelia's permission, of course) we can share with you today.

Gerbits Stadium
Also under construction.

Between the new library and the stadium, they were already strapping the resources of the Pearl Construction Country, so ground-breaking for Ophelia's chem lab would have to wait until a construction crew was available.

They thought the campus seriously needed a new home for the Mathematics Department, which currently was shoe-horned into the Green Science Building, but they decided that could wait. These two experts knew exactly how far they could push for new toys and just when to hit them with a new idea. In this case, they would bring up the problem of the Math Department right after the birth of their next children, when their husbands' thoughts would already be leaping ahead to the new babies' future.

Nevertheless, they already had the site picked out for a new mathematics building and had arranged to buy the dirt for it!

Thanks! Grin

It really bothered me that there was no stadium. When you're flying into almost any university's airport, the the first thing you look for is the stadium because it is invariably the more easily detected landmark.

Um, not Bonaventure... No football team, the soccer, lacrosse, and baseball teams all play outdoors.

St. Bonaventure is a BASKETBALL school!

Universities have airports? How can anyone teach with the whine of jet engines going by every five seconds?

I don't know of any universities (in real life) that have an airport right on campus. Mostly they're a few miles out of town, like other airports; at least until the town grows out to surround them.

On the other hand, I've worked right at the end of the runway of Ellington Air Force Base in Houston. Also, McCarron Airport in Las Vegas is right in the middle of the city; the runway overruns terminate on city streets (including Las Vegas Boulevard, AKA "The Strip"). Inside the buildings, we don't hear the airplanes unless it's a fighter with afterburners on.
