How do you create a shared directory on Windows?

I'm sure this is baby stuff, but I've never done it, don't know how, but want to do it so I can easily move files among my machines on my home network.

Do this on each WinXP machine:
1) Click "Start," then "My Network Places."
2) Under "Network Tasks," click "Set up home or small office network" or "Set up a wireless network for home or small office" as appropriate. A wizard opens.
3) Read, answer questions and click next until you get to the screens asking for computer name and workgroup. Each machine should have a unique name. Use the same name for the workgroup on all machines. Leave the "My Network Places" window open.
4) You can share entire drive partitions or single folders.
4a) Entire partition: Go to "My Computer." Select drive by letter. Right click. Choose "Sharing and Security."
4b) Folder: Navigate to the folder containing the desired folder. Find the icon for the desired folder. Right click. Choose "Sharing and Security."
4c) In either case, read, answer questions and click next.

5) Back to the network window.
5a) Once you have more than one machine configured, you should be able to view the names of the machines on the network with "View workgroup computers."
5b) You can view all the shared folders and drives on another machine by clicking on its icon.

If you've got Win9x machines on the network, you'll be told to run certain things off your WinXP installation CD on those machines. I haven't found it to be necessary, but then, I'm just copying files off the 98 machine from the XP machine. I'd probably need to do that if I wanted to transfer both ways.

This makes twice in three days I've told people how to set up networking...

I'm glad you answered that one.
It's easy to do but a pain in the butt to write out.
I'm glad you posted it in here, Rose.
Thanks!

Thanks, Rose!

If you share a whole drive, does that slow down your network? I'm thinking it might because a machine updating its directories would have to transmit all the changes through the net, and Windows creates lot of temporary files in the normal course of its courses.

Well, sunny beach! I didn't have to go past step 1 to do what I wanted to do! Rolling on the Floor Laughing

I went to "File Sharing" and suddenly discovered that my laptop (where I wanted to send a file) already had a shared folder where I needed one!

I think the "Pearl Sims" item must be an old Web Folder. I'm on my big machine right now. When I went to "My Network Places" on my little machine, which I usually use for web stuff, it had a bazillion web folders listed. I'm afraid to click on them. embarrassed

Anyhow, to advance the cause of America's space program in the work du jour, all I had to do was to drag a file onto the shared folder and there it was!

("IVDS" stands for Interface Validation for Distributed Systems, y'see. Only my laptop has the tools I need to get to NASA's VPN. You can probably extrapolate from there what I'm up to.)

But now I know how to make this work for lots of other stuff! Hooray! Grin

I'm thinking that this would be a very easy way to get an old Windows box with a honking big disk drive and use it as a dedicated file server.

Networking is a wonderful thing!!! I've done that for many years now.
It's a wonderful way to back-up certain files too.
I'm sure you're going to have fun with it.

I think the other machines only find out about changes when they open the folder, so for "real time" updates, you'd have to have a folder hanging open while it was being changed.

That sounds logical. It's sort of like using webdav. I've learned the hard way not to open a directory with more than 500 large images with Thumbnails showing. blush

I just realized that now I have a very reliable way to back up my whole folder for The Sims 2! Grin
