Chapter 176: College Connection

At the mention of their sons' choices for mates, the conversation over the Frankses' dinner table degenerated into a general gossip session, but Ophelia's worry was still on Her mind the next day. She brought it up with Her maid, Lucy Hanby, over an afternoon game of chess.

Lucy Knows Everybody, Almost

"How about forming a girls' club?" Lucy suggested.

"What? And get an already-organized girl gang even more organized?"

"That's my point," Lucy said. "Give them something to do besides hang out downtown. I would have liked to have had a girls' club when I was growing up!"

"Yeah, maybe so. I can't speak from experience. I was quite happy with my own family when I was a teenager."

"And your boyfriend. He was practically living with you!"

"Yeah, that, too. I'll think on that idea, Lucy."

To Her surprise, Lucy won the chess game. 'I must be more distracted by this than I thought!' She thought. 'Or maybe it's just that Lucy is getting better at chess! How the heck did she manage to sneak that pawn all the way to the eighth rank?'

"Do it on campus!"

That evening when Greg had turned over the Hero patrol to Barry, he flew over to the university to pick up Her youngest daughters, Farrah and Flavia. She had invited them for dinner and, even now that they were young adults, the girls still enjoyed it when daddy carried them. Having them squealing with delight as he swooped through the mountain pass was squirmy, cuddly fun.

Lucy made the chili. She and She were still going on about the problem of teen girl gangs when the family sat down for the evening repast.

"If you're going to build a girls' club, do it on campus!" Farrah said. "There are lots of unattached guys on campus, so you could solve everybody's problems at the same time!"

"Is that a good solution?" Greg said. "We're not talking about over-achievers here, and the university won't lower its academic standards for a meddlesome social experiment."

Flavia waved her spoon at him. "You'd better not, daddy! I'm working hard for my degree, and I want it to mean something!"

"Me, too!" Lucy said. "But I like Farrah's idea. You don't have to lower the academic standards. Just give them scholarships and a nice place to live on campus, and let them learn at their own pace. Oh, stay put, She; I'll clean up your dishes."

"How about a new dorm?"

"Why not build a new dorm, daddy?" Farrah asked.

"Or a sorority house!" Flavia added.

"A sorority is probably closer to the mark," Greg said. "But I wouldn't take it to the Panhellenic Council right off. We're talking about moving an organization that already exists from the city to the campus. We should let the girls decide what to call it and whether they want it to be a Greek house."

"They need some structure," She said. "This place will be just another dorm if there aren't any rules."

Greg nodded to his wife. "Good point. We can require that students in this dorm wear uniforms. Make it a special livery just for them. Still, they need more control over their own lives, too. Let them choose the livery."

"I'll build the dorm."

"So you'll do it, daddy?" Farrah asked.

"Sure. I'll pay for a new dorm and fund some full scholarships. Make it a special fund for underprivileged young women. Full scholarships, all expenses paid and maybe some extra spending money. I'll leave it up to somebody else to talk the girls into going to college. I'm really not so sure all this will do any good, but at least it will keep Ophelia happy. The worst that can happen is that we end up with more student housing, and we need that anyhow."

"Thanks, honey," She said. "We'll take care of the organization. You're right about the important thing, too. If we can get the girl gang to campus, Ophelia will worry less, and it's not good for her to worry so much, especially when she's pregnant."

Chapter 177: Residence for Underprivileged Young Ladies

Ever true to his word, the next morning Greg called his architects at the Pearl Construction Company and told them to get started on a new dorm.

Greg Orders the Construction

"Yup, on that hill in the middle of the dorm district. No, don't worry so much about conforming architecture. It should be inviting, but maybe a bit secluded. Room for eight students. Make them doubles so they'll have roommates. Student rooms up, public space down. It needs to be pretty nice; I don't want to have to tear down another bargain-basement dorm. Build a pool out back."

"Ouch! That much, huh? Well, OK. Let's just do it." 'Sheesh! How did they talk me into this? The things I'll do for a blonde!"

'Hey! I heard that!'

'Oops! Was I leaking? Just kidding, sweetheart!'

'Kidding or not, you hurt my widdle feelings!'

'Oh, I'm sorry dear! What can I do to make it up to you?'

She sent him a very explicit mental image of what he could to do make it up to Her, immediately followed by a sparkling mental chuckle that danced through his head.

He returned the mirth, followed by a mental image of his own. 'Hey, am I being manipulated?'

'You sure are! But that doesn't get you out of it!'

The construction company got to work on the new project, and with their usual amazing efficiency, soon had the new structure ready for occupancy.

Chapter 178: ...Gang Aft A-Gley

With help from Ophelia, the ladies succeeded in talking the girl gang into moving to the new residence. Once they had the girls past their fear of trying something new, it was an easy sell. The number of unattached young men on campus provided the deciding point.

Soon, however, they were to discover that their schemes bore a fruit of a flavor different from what they had intended.

Hiram and Norman were born soon after the girls moved in to the new place. The babies kept them busy, so they had not had an opportunity to check up on how things were going once they'd managed to get the girl gang out of downtown Happy Valley. The first word came with Monica Backlace when she stopped by for her daily after-work visit with Norman.

"You won't believe what they named the place!"

"I was down to the university this afternoon," Monica said, "and stopped by that new place you built. Um, was that really what you were planning?"

"How so?" She asked.

"Well, you won't believe what they named the place! And the outfits they chose! Oh my!"

"OK, give!" Greg said. "What did they name it?"

"Roissy."

He choked. "Roissy? Well, ahem, that's one I wouldn't have thought of!"

"What's Roissy?" She asked.

"Erm... better Google for it," he said.

He felt a mental touch. 'Tell me!'

He sent her the title of a book, followed by selected imagery.

'Oh my!' She thought back. He felt a mental snicker. Then, 'Hey, can we try that?'

'Sure! But we already know you like that!'

'But we haven't tried this one!' She sent a very explicit image back to him.

'Oh! That one! Well, OK, if you want to. I'll try anything once, but only if you're sure you're not pregnant!'

'I do and I'm sure! But we can solve that problem, too!'

Aloud, She said, "Honey, maybe you had better fly down there and see what's going on. I can stay with the babies."

'All right, but you'd better turn off the blue movies you're sending or I'll be in no shape to cope with a bunch of wayward college girls! Think about Monica or something!'

'Oops! OK!'

'Ack! That's worse! Try thinking about her with clothes on!'

'I can't help it! Once I get started only one thing will shut it off!'

"Hmm..." he said. "I'll run down to the campus later tonight."

'Much later!'

'Exactly!'

"So, Monica, let's all go see how the babies are doing!"

I'm definitely liking this plot!

(Going for the naughtiness angle, eh? Grin)

Nice house, too (modest little dorm, cough cough). I'm just trying to build my first majorly big house (pictures shortly), and I'm feeling quite the amateur compared to you and other Hullabalooers; but I persevere! *8)

Maybe that's it! That whole era had to have done something strange to our minds! lol

Besides Apollo, the Cramers remember:
    the World Wars,
    the invention of the airplane,
    development of the automobile,
    the invention of plastic,
    rural electrification,
the invention of motion pictures, and
    the Hula Hoop!

Is it any wonder that their minds would boggle at the notion of $90 tennis shoes?

And the less heard about rap, the better!

Hey, this is a highly intellectual morality play!

:compress: having spent most of my working life in universities - intellectuals do not know zilch about morality! Or rather, they know just enough not to take any notice of conventional morality :compress:

The Cramers' namesakes, my maternal grandparents, were born in Indiana at the end of the 18th century. They were a too late for Mongolfier but the Wright Brothers and Henry Ford play a prominent role in their childhood memories.

As best I recall, my immediate family were the first among my relatives to have a television. One of the guys in the church gave it to dad as a gift. That's when we were living in Roanoke, Virginia. I still distinctly remember a bunch of guys coming over one day to erect an antenna on the roof of the parsonage and build that behemoth in the living room.

Of all the houses I've lived in, that was my favorite. That's probably because it's the first house I remember living in. I don't remember exactly what it looked like, but I think the address was 1024 Montrose Ave.

At least the layout of the region looks right on MapQuest. I remember Morningside Street and the big park across the street from our house. It's only a quarter mile to the Belmont Christian Church, so that must be the place!

Way cool! I found the web site for the Belmont Christian Church, and it's still called The Friendly Church on the Corner!

Heh. The one thing I can say that I've learned about "intellectuals" is that they aren't!

Chapter 179: Roissy

The babies were asleep again. So was She, snoozing happily on a big towel draped across the bed while glistening with sundry ungents and ointments he had slathered on Her as a salve to the afternoon's mischief. He spent a few moments admiring Her, and then it was time to get on with the next order of business.

The sun was headed toward the horizon when Greg finally flew down to the campus. This time he wasn't burdened with armfuls of daughters, so with no need to take it easy for them, he made good time.

His first surprise upon entering the new residence, after getting used to the throbbing beat from the stereo, was the livery that the girls had chosen for themselves.

Sierra and Rosemarie Model the Roissy Livery

Short skirts and knit tops were standard garb for coeds, but the fishnet stockings seemed a bit much. It was also the first time he'd seen a sweater that required underwiring--um, make that overwiring--to keep the neckline in place! The mules were right out of the book, too.

'Maybe costumes weren't such a good idea, but oh well,' he thought. 'at least they're not wearing high heels!

Kaylynn was finishing up her last term paper.

He spotted Kaylynn at one of the computers, working on her last term paper. He didn't want to interrupt her, but he was glad that somebody was getting some college studies done at that place! Other than Kaylynn, everyone seemed to be involved in either dancing or a non-stop pillow fight!

Their selection of furniture seemed to be an odd mixture of Victoriana, rustic, and modern kitsch. He was just looking around when Kaylynn finished her term paper. She told him (told, not asked, not that he really cared) that he was going to dance with her. Kaylynn had been working hard on her Senior year studies and really needed to blow off some steam!

Just then, Lucy Hanby stopped by and plunked herself down at one the desks to get her own homework done. 'So I've built a study hall for the maids and outfitted a girl gang to terrorize the campus! This doesn't seem to have gone exactly according to plan.'

When Lucy finished her class assignment, she cut in on Kaylynn. That left him free for a moment. Having seen enough of the going-on at Roissy to report back to headquarters, he thought it might be a good time to make an exit.

Chloe seemed like a nice girl, in a nice sort of way.

His plan was immediately thwarted when a comely redhead draped herself around him.

"Hi! My name is Chloe," she said. "I know you! You're the guy that paid for this place!"

"Um, yes," he said while gently peeling Chloe off. 'Hmm, soft. That sweater must provide all the support. Good design work.' "That would be me. I hope you are enjoying it."

"I know just how to thank you for your generosity!" she said. "Why don't we--"

"Dance?" 'As if I could if I would, and I wouldn't but I couldn't anyhow! Golly! She is becoming more adventurous in Her dotage!'

Chloe pouted briefly, but she said, "Right! Dance!"

Soon all the other Roissy girls discovered who he was and wanted to dance with him, too. He did his best to keep up with them, but eventually he had to admit defeat.

"Enough!" he said. "I'm getting too old for this! I'm stiff and sore all over!"

"Stiff?" said one of the coeds with a hopeful look.

"Stiff, as in stiff joints. Sore as in sore muscles. I've had quite a workout today!" 'And if I'm this worn out, I wonder how She is feeling right now!'

That seemed like a pretty good exit line, but again he was thwarted when he found three of the Roissy girls toward the hot tub. One of them insisted, "Just the thing you need to relax before making that long journey back to town!"

He couldn't think of a counter to that argument, especially since they were basically right. So he let himself be escorted to the hot tub that he didn't know he had bought.

Trigonometry au Coquettes

The girls did not seem to suffer from any inhibitions. No sense of propriety, either. So he found himself, exhausted, in the hot tub with three naked coeds. For a while, they were taking turns rubbing the kinks out of his sore muscles. 'She is going to insist that I tell Her about this, with all the details and embellisments. That will get Her motor running again! I'm doomed!'

But when inquisitive fingers started exploring and trying to relieve him of his swimming trunks, he summoned all his resolve and sent them back their corners. He was caught between his desire to be polite and having to refuse advances that usually he could deal with by unsubtly mentioning his wife.

When the Roissy girls didn't take that hint, he tried a different tack: distraction. It started with telling them stories about ancient mathemeticians from the World of Mathematics. Then, soon enough, he found himself teaching an impromptu class in trigonometry right there in the hot tub!

To his amazement, the girls seemed to be listening to every word and even picking up on the mathematical principles even without the aid of a chalk board. 'Either they all great actresses or they've been starved for proper learning!'

Finally it was late enough that he could make his excuse and leave. He gave them one final bit of entertainment by transforming into Hero mode and launching right there from the back deck.

On his starlit cruise home, he spied Barry on the night patrol and waved to him. Then it was just a matter of landing on the back porch and then, hopefully, to bed and much-needed rest. However, that latter plan was foiled when She greeted him at the door, filled with energy after Her evening nap. It was quite a while before he finally got to sleep.

Chapter 180: Roissy After Dark

Once the stodgy old man had left, the party really got started at Roissy!

...the party really got started!

As it had been every night since they opened the place, inhibitions were shed along with clothing and the girls rocked through the night. They were certainly enjoying their time on campus but, tragically, two victims were rapidly falling prey to their nocturnal mayhem: (1) their grades, and (2) the totally exhausted censor snakes!

Chapter 181: Passion and the Pool Table

The next day after they got the babies down for their nap, She wanted to have a bit of fun.

"Let's go up to the pool room, sweetie," She said. "I haven't seen you do those tricky pool shots since we were in college!"

They climbed up the stairs to the game room above the porte cochere.

She was watching him play pool.
The Theda Bara pictures by D. M. Chess were born in this thread and were last seen lurking in this thread.

"Oh wow!" he said. "Theda Bara! I like those photos!"

"I knew you would! Inspiring, aren't they?"

"They certainly are! But not necessarily inspiring me to think about pool!"

"Nuh uh! You don't get out of playing pool that easily, buddy!"

"Aren't You going to play?"

"Nope. I'm going to watch!"

Come around to this side of the table!

Then, a few moments later, "No, come around to this side of the table. Yeah, that's it."

"But You can't see the table from down there on the sofa."

"That's OK. I can see what I want to see! Oh, do that more slowly. Do you have any idea how suggestive it is when you stroke that pool cue?"

He laughed. "Is there anything that's not suggestive to You, ma'am?"

"Well, not everything is as suggestive as cucumbers and beer bottles--"

"Beer bottles?"

"Lone Star longnecks! Think about it!"

"I'll never drink beer from a bottle again!"

"Get me a bottle and I'll show you what I can do with one!"

He gave her his very best leer. "Lecherous wench!"

"How well you know Me! And there's something else you should know!"

"Ma'am?"

Lingerie, Sheba Style

"I'm not wearing anything under My dress!"

Another brief interlude, then--

"Oof! Just a sec... there, that's better! I really didn't need the cue ball in My kidney!"

Chapter 182: Aaron's Advance

While She was wondering if the only way to get rid of the stains would be to replace the felt on the pool table ("... again!"), Barry and Gloria were settling into their new life as grown-ups and parents.

Company for dinner
Valerie and Donald Matson, Marisa Bendett, and Kaylynn Langerak visit Barry and Gloria.
Marisa is the one in the pink dress. Valerie eating for two.

Barry knew the Matsons a little because Valerie is the mother of his half-sister, Sabrina, but they didn't really grow to be friends until he was working with Donald at the police station. Donald is the police station end of the radio link that Barry uses for alerts of problems requiring the attention of a superhero.

The Matsons are also Meadow (Thayer) Tellerman's godparents, so after dismissing another retelling of the tale of the giant robot, they were catching up on the latest gossip and Meadow and her shiney new husband, Cornelius. Meadow's infant twins, Arthur and Arlene (two more of Barry's half-siblings), are doing very well.

All this discussion of Barry's siblings lead Gloria to do some private reminiscing about her relationship with Barry's father during the wild old days. 'Well, Valerie and Meadow might have given him children, but they are two among many. I was the first to produce a grandchild for Her! It's a shame She can't be here for Aaron's birthday tonight.'

Aaron's Toddler Birthday
Clockwise from Kaylynn: Valerie Matson, Donald Matson, Gloria Baybrace Bennett, Barry with Aaron, and Marisa Bendett.

So, although She and Greg were busy with their own little Hiram that night, sufficient members of their extended family were on hand to usher their first grandchild into the state of toddlerhood.

Aaron Bennett with his father, Barry
Donald and Marisa are pummeling each other with pillows in the background.

As Aaron grew, it became increasingly obvious that he greatly favors his mother in his appearance.

One might think that with such a delightful child in their family, Barry and Gloria would settle down into the tranquility of domestic life, raising another generation of Bennetts and pursuing their careers, but the truth of it far from that. After all, this is Barry we're talking about here!
