Chapter 168: Monica in Motion

While Amarilla was busily ambushing people in her bungled attempt at a character assassination of Sheik Omar, She and Greg stopped by Monica Backlace's house for a visit. They wanted to make sure that all was well with her baby.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Are you sure really want me to raise your child, Monica?" She asked. "I'm more than willing, but you shouldn't feel obligated--"

"Nuh uh," Monica said. "You can't get out of your offer that easily! I really don't want to be a single mom again, and I really don't want to get married!"

"Well, as long as you're sure--"

"I'm sure. Hey, have you met Regina Tsvirkunov?"

"Yes, I have. Nice girl. Well, nice in a 'nice' kind of meaning. She's one of Arabella's girls."

"That's her! She's helping around the house while I'm pregnant because I can't keep up with the place."

Attracted by the sound of her name, a black-haired slavic beauty came into the room.

Regina Tsvirkunov

"Hi She!" she said. "Good to see you again! To make a long story short: Arabella and all the girls are fine. Business has been slow ever since the campus opened, and beside, you took our best customer away from us! I'm working as a housekeeper when I can find the work. Enough on that! Wow it looks like both of you are about pop!"

"It's any day now for me, too," She said.

The Primary Guilty Party

"And here's the primary guilty party himself!" Monica said. "I'm sure you've met Gina."

"Oh yes!" Regina said. "We've met!"

"Indeed we have!" Greg confirmed.

"Hey, I always get energetic just before it's time," She said. "Crank up the boom box, Monica! I want to move!"

Moms in Motion

It was Sheba's unsubtle way of making sure that Monica got plenty of excercise during her pregnancy. With encouraging calls of "C'mon, move it! Shake it, baby!" her motives were obvious, but Monica enjoyed the afernoon visit and Greg had fun getting reacquainted with the exotic Miss Tsvirkunov, albeit in a much more innocent way.

Parting Assurances

Despite their good intentions, the pregnant ladies tired easily. With assurances that Regina would take care of Monica and that Monica would take good care of the baby, the Bennetts bid their friends a good evening and ventured on home.

What were you saying somewhere recently, Greg, about not being able to write a convincing bad-guy?

Chapter 169: Again, Family Council

As soon as they got home, She took a nap. They had a big event planned for later that night.

Bennett Family Council

That evening, all of Her kids came over for a family council meeting. It started with Barry reporting progress on his plans for world domination, and they they got down to the important stuff.

"As the first item of business," Graham said, "I propose that we invest in a larger table!"

"I agree," Cally said. "There isn't room for us all! And we're missing more than half of our brothers and sisters!"

"Too right!" She said. "I want My girls to participate in the family council, at the very least. Besides that, I have one in the chute that will be here any minute!"

Greg nodded. "All right. We'll look into a larger table. Or if we must, we'll set up some a NASA-style meeting room upstairs. We never did much with that space anyhow. I'll add to Graham's proposal that we extend family council meetings to our children's spouses and fiances, too. After all, they have a stake in our mischief."

"No objection here," She said. "That's a good idea even if we have to hire a hall."

Alexander waived for attention. "Me too. Penelope feels left out when I don't invite her to family meetings."

"Any objections?" Greg said. "Seeing none, so ordered. We'll figure out a way to get the whole mob together even if we have rend the Party Palace. Now, on to the regular business of business. How are things going on campus? Anybody need a job? Who's pregnant? Who needs capital? Anybody got a new business plan? What do we need to talk Ophelia into this time? Has anybody noticed anything weird going on?"

Then long past midnight the multitudinous Bennetts schemed away, meticulously planning their own future and that of nearly everyone else in Happy Valley.

I was thinking that this is an example of how I screw up when I try to write a convincing bad guy! lol

Once I got to looking at things from the viewpoint of Sheik Omar's wives, I realized that he's not such a bad guy after all! But then, I guess really the bad guy in this story is Amarilla Allspin!

Hey, you might be on to something with the Socialist Worker. I once tried converting that type of NPC to a player character and had serious mess, so I'd probably want to have Sheik Omar put her up in her own house next door. Or rather, across the street; his estate takes up an entire city block! That way if she bombs I won't lose the whole household with her.

But anyhow, after a long career of stealing babies, I figure she must be almost as obsessed with the li'l criters as She, so it might do her good to settle down and raise a few little Arabs of her very own!

Chapter 170: One for the Money! Two for the Show!

The next morning, GD 132 (finally!), Monica came over unannounced. She didn't wait to be greeted; just let herself in the front door and called out, "Sheeebbaaa! Help! I think it's my time!"

"In here, Monica!" Greg called from the master bedroom. "C'mon in! You don't want to miss this!"

Monica waddled into the bedroom just in time to see another blessed event.

Hiram Bennett, born at 7:32 AM on GD 132

"Oh! He's beautiful!" Monica said. "He's just so... so... yowitch! Oh my! Oh myyyyyy!"

For Monica, Hiram Was a Preview of Coming Attractions

Just moments after She delivered Hiram, Monica's went into labor. Two hours after Hiram was born, her labor came to fruition and Greg really had something to cheer about!

Monica Delivers Norman in the Bennetts' Bedroom at 9:31 AM

"That's great!" Greg said. "Twins, the easy way!"

She and Monica looked at same time. "Easy?" they said, in chorus.

"Next time, you have the baby!" Monica said. "Then you'll know from easy!"

"Well, having coached three twin births," Greg said, "I'd still say that it's easy if you have two women working the problem."

"I'll grant you that," She said. "If we're going to have twins, it's good to have a helper!"

Chapter 171: Monica's Resolve

"So, do I get to hold one of them?" Greg asked.

She carefully handed Hiram to him. "Oh, Monica! He's such a cutie! Can I hold yours?"

"You're more than welcome to!" Monica said. "You might as well get used to it!"

Even With Norman, It's Love At First Sight

Once unburdened of her new child, Monica sat down to make a note of the event in her diary. The reality of the situation came over her as she scanned all the business appointments in her diary, and once again she realized that she most emphatically did not want to be a single mom again.

Monica Does Not Want to Be a Single Mom Again!

Monica also realized that there was no way that She would ever understand how she felt about it. Babies were wonderful. They were cute and cuddly and adorable. As long as they were somebody else's babies!

Still, little Hiram was quite a bundle of joy. "Can I hold yours, She?" she asked.

"Of course," Greg said, and handed Hiram to Monica before he accepted his other son from his wife.

Greg cuddles Norman while Monica gets to know Hiram

"Monica, are you really sure--" She said.

"I'm sure! I'm very, very sure! I'll be over every day after work to visit, but unless you've changed your mind, I'll leave Norman with his father."

They spent the next few minutes talking about plans for the babies. The Bennetts had lots of cribs and baby supplies stacked up in the attic so there was no need to make a shopping list. Then, all too soon, it was time for Monica to hurry off to work.

Chapter 172: You Know My Methods

Once the mothers had the babies snuggled into the cribs, Greg and She followed Monica to the front door.

"You're an amazing woman..."

"You are truly an amazing woman, Monica," She said. "All ready to go to work right after giving birth!"

"Touché! I guess I had that coming! And you're still an amazing woman, little Sheba!"

"I'll care for Norman just as if he were one of my own, you know."

"Yes, I know."

Greg smiled. "That's my amazing wife!"

This earned him a kiss, which unfortunately did not work out too well for Monica.

Monica gets the elbow.

'Harumph!' Monica thought. 'She gets a kiss, and I get an elbow! Is this fair? I gave him a baby, too!'

While they were kissing, She called Greg on the tight beam. 'Uh oh! I just smacked my elbow into Monica's boob! You'd better kiss her so she doesn't sulk! She has enough to think about without feeling rejected!'

'But...'

'You know my methods, Sherlock!'

'I thought Sherlock was supposed to say that to Watson--'

'Ahem!'

'Oh. Right. It's time to just shut up and kiss her.'

'Right!'

As soon as he released his wife, Greg surprised Monica with a warm embrace and an even warmer kiss, wisely keeping any dialog to himself.

A small gesture, but its effects last forever.

'OK, your turn!' Greg thought.

"I really don't know how to adequately thank you for your baby--" She said.

'Hey,' Greg thought. 'In the words of a wise woman I once knew: Just Shut Up And Kiss Her!'

'Touché!'

Monica's Reward

Monica gasped at the intensity of it. "Oh! I think you just did!" she said. "I'd like to continue this, but I have to get moving now or I'll be late for work! I'm sure things have really piled up while I was on maternity leave! I'll be back after five!"

"OK! I'll save some kisses for you!"

As Monica hurried down the front steps, She looked at her husband. He heard her in his mind once again.

"The babies are asleep..."

'Hmm...' She thought. 'Honey, the babies are asleep, so we have a couple of hours...'

Nah. If it were the dress, She would just change her clothes.

Chapter 173: Gilbert's Story

You may recall that back in Chapter 137, Gilbert Bennett had just arrived on campus at Happy Valley University. Resisting incredible pressure to move into Manse Collegium with some of the other family kids, Gilbert made arrangements to live with his half-sisters, Sandra, Wanda, and Brenda.

Although they are related only by marriage, these are the trio whom She has always called "My Girls."

Just In Time For Breakfast

That morning found Gilbert's half-sisters having breakfast with Brenda's boyfriend, Ross Addison. When they heard his taxi pull up outside, the three of them hastily scrambled into their clothes. Then they hurried back to the table so by the time he made it into the house, they were once again non-chalantly having breakast.

"Hey, Gil!" Sandra called out. "Welcome to the Mad Manse! Just drop your stuff anywhere. We'll help you haul it up to your room after breakfast!"

Wanda waved her spoon. "You must be hungry after traveling all night, so grab a bowl and have a seat!"

Gilbert thought about kissing Sandra and Wanda, but Brenda was there, too. He really didn't know Brenda very well. The social protocol wasn't clear, so he elected to forego the osculatory ritual.

Sandra and Wanda went off to complete their early-morning rituals. Brenda had never had a chance to get to know her half-brother, so she sat with Gilbert while he ate his cereal.

Brenda Kept Gilbert Company While He Ate

"So, how's Mom?" she asked.

Gilbert chuckled. "Which one?"

That brought a giggle from Brenda. She grinned. "I was thinking of our Mom, as opposed to your mom, but I'll settle for some good gossp about Aunt Frieda if you've got something!"

"Oh, they're both doing great. Our Mom is pregnant again. My mom just had a baby, so I have a baby half-sister. So, how's your mom?"

"You mean Narcissa? I have no idea. She doesn't bother me, and I don't bother her."

"That's a shame."

"No, not really. Sheba has always been all the mother I've ever needed. Narcissa just provided some genes to get me going. Mama Sheba sustains me."

"Y'know, Brenda, sometimes I wish my life were like yours. It's confusing having two dads and two moms, only half of whom are my real mother and father. I never know what to tell people."

"Welcome to the Mad Manse!"

Before he could move from his seat, Brenda grabbed Gilbert's empty bowl and put it into the dishwasher. "I think I know what you mean, Gil," she said. "I hadn't thought about how easy it is for me. I just talk about my Mom and dad, and I never mention the self-centered bitch who bore me."

"Thank you for understanding, sis. It means a lot to me, really."

"Well, so, you know you're more than welcome here at the Mad Manse, but why are you here? I heard that Gloria organized quite a campaign to get you to move into the Collegium!"

"I wouldn't have felt out of place there," Gilbert said, petulantly.

"Wha--? After all the effort they went through to make you feel welcome?"

"Because of what we've been talking about. I have something in common with you and Sandra and Wanda. But over at the Collegium, they are all Her children."

"Oh, I'm sure that doesn't matter to Her!"

"Agreed! I, too, am sure that it doesn't matter to Her and that She loves me as much as any of Her own children, and even as much as Mama Frieda does. But the important thing is that it matters to me!"

"You shouldn't be ashamed--"

"Oh, I'm not! That's just the point! I'm proud of my mother! And of my step-mother! For that matter, I'm really proud of both my father and my step-father!"

"Yeah, Uncle Giles Edward is really cool people! You should be proud of him! As for our Mom, well, that goes without saying!"

"Exactly! But there's the rub. You can understand it. I expect that Sandra and Wanda do, too. But how I could I hope to explain it to those poor souls who only have one mom and dad?"

Brenda laughed. "So, you're saying that you wanted to live with us because we're all bastards!"

"Yup! That about sums it up!"

"Hey, I can live with that! So, brother, welcome to the Hall of the Bastards!" She settled things by planting a kiss on him. He hugged her and returned the kiss in kind.

"Maybe we should make our own banner!" he said.

"With a sinister stripe!"

"Exactly!"

Chapter 174: Great Great-Grandparents

While Gilbert and his half-sisters were merrily making their way through their Freshman year, their great-grandparents were trying to cope with the growing population of youngsters at the Collegium. No matter how much they loved their progeny, there was only so much of them that they could take!

Though they were physically young again and becoming quite young at heart, the Cramers had to cope with the reality that they were old before Neil Armstrong took his first small step on the moon. They reveled in that event, but to the kids it was just an anecdote in history. They were were just not able to identify with the childen's music and the strange style of dancing that was so suggestive but the dance partners never touched each other. And most of all, after decades of living quiet, productive lives, the constant chaos at the Collegium was really getting to them.

So, on a bright, sunshiny morning, Oatha and Hazel announced that they had bought the lot across the street and construction on their new house was almost complete. They would move that afternoon.

The Cramers' Strategically Located Campus Home

It wasn't a big place--the lot was small--but the location was strategic. Their front porch and the balcony above it looked out at Manse Collegium where many of their great-grandchildren lived. Their back yard abutted the house that The Girls and Gilbert called Mad Manse.

Their new home was considerably more humble than the Collegium, but it suited them well. Once again Hazel had a sun porch, this one open to the perpetually perfect weather, and Oatha had a balcony for his telescope and a workshop where he could putter with this tools. For what little housekeeping they had to do, that nice young maid stopped by each day after she finished tidying up the big house across the street.

The kids buzzed constantly between the two houses, and a stop by their great-grandparents house became a regular stop on the tour. The Cramers looked forward to these daily visits; it let them enjoy their grandchildren's company in just the right dose, without having to actually live with the youngsters.

"That's a great crop of kids!"

Oatha remarked on this one night while he and Hazel were working on their college students. "We must have done something right, mama! Three generations later and they're still a great crop o' kids!"

"You're right, papa! They surely are! Especially now that we don't have to live with them!"

Maybe that's it! That whole era had to have done something strange to our minds! lol

Besides Apollo, the Cramers remember:
    the World Wars,
    the invention of the airplane,
    development of the automobile,
    the invention of plastic,
    rural electrification,
the invention of motion pictures, and
    the Hula Hoop!

Is it any wonder that their minds would boggle at the notion of $90 tennis shoes?

And the less heard about rap, the better!

Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 175: Busybodies

It all started, as often is the case, one evening when She and Ophelia were plotting and scheming about the welfare of the Happy Valley citizenry. They were having dinner with Ophelia's husband, Tommy Franks, when the subject came up.

It happened at the time that fantastically fertile She was still carrying her son Hiram and Ophelia was pregnant with her second child.

"It's Bad for Business!"

"Have you noticed the number of girl gangs hanging out downtown?" Ophelia said. "I'm worried that this could lead to trouble."

She thought a moment. "Now that you mention it, I have been wondering at the number of girls going out with girls. At the moment, we don't seem to have enough boys to go around."

Tommy gave his wife a quizzical look and started to speak, but instead stuffed a piece of his pork chop into his mouth. Ophelia waited for him to finish chewing before she said, "OK, honey, you're thinking of something! Let's have it!"

"Um, well, OK, but remember that you did ask! Arabella was complaining about that same thing."

She chuckled. "Arabella? I understand, but I enjoy the incongruity that Happy Valley's most notorious madame would be worried about teenage girls going bad!"

Ophelia looked askance at Tommy. "OK, I acknowledge that I did ask! Now, just when were you talking to Arabella?"

He cleared his throat and stammered. "She's in on the restaurant deal. I ran into her downtown and we were talking about the restaurant when she mentioned that her main business had really slowed down. She thinks it's because of the girl gangs. With a shortage of boys, they're providing significant competition among Arabella's regular customers!"

"Oh, that's all right, honey. I was just teasing you! This isn't good for them or Arabella--not that I see Arabella's business as vital to the regional economy--but I don't see what we can do about it!"

"Yeah," She said. "It's not like we're in a position to increase the local population of teenage boys any time soon!"

"Exactly!" Tommy said with a grin. "You're both doing your best and there's no doubt about your quality control system, but there's a pretty long lead time in the production queue that's inhibiting your ability to make up for the materials shortfall!"

"Not to mention the fact that we have half a chance of exacerbating the issue!" Ophelia said.

"So what's so bad about all this?" She asked. "It seems the girls are finding ways to enjoy life while they're growing up, and--"

"Everything is bad about it!" Ophelia said. "They're already causing unnecessary strife in several households around town, and they're so agressive that becoming a public nuisance downtown! It's only a matter of time before they turn to mischief worse than seducing husbands from all over the valley!"

"You might have a point, sweetheart," Tommy said. "These things tend to balance out eventually, but think about it, She, what are the chances that one of your sons will want a girl who has seduced half the guys in Happy Valley?"

She did think about it. Eating is a good way to stall for time. "All right, I'll acknowledge that point. Considering who some of our sons chose, I'd say they like to keep it in the family!"
