Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 149: So Easily Replaced

Once Ezekiel was safely out the door and headed home to a cold shower, Evangeline retired to her room. She wanted a private moment to think about her plans for the the future.

"I'll be a woman soon!"

'I'm going to be a woman soon! A real campus co-ed! I wonder what I'll look like when I grow up. I'm pretty hot stuff as a teen! At least Zeke thinks so! Will this figure get even better?"

While Evangeline was engaged in her own private thoughts, her mother was sinking deeper into shock about the prospect of not having a child around the house.

Maureen had hoped to get some more mileage out of her teenage daughter before she lost her to the world, and now her daughter was headed off to college and from there who knew where?

She thought about Evangeline's friend, Ivana. All through the evening's events, Ivana had kept to herself, feigning extreme interest in her bowl of macaroni and cheese.

Maureen felt sorry for the poor girl. She was an orphan and didn't seem to have too many friends. She had come over to visit Evangeline, but her visit hadn't turned out well. She had no role to play in Evangeline's plans for college so she had remained meekly quiet and in the background. She apparently wasn't happy about her best friend moving to college, either, based on the wistful looks Ivana had while Evangeline was escorting her boyfriend to the door.

Maureen has an idea.

An idea came to mind. In an uncharacteristically impetuous act, Maureen went to Ivana and invited her to move in with them!

"You can have Evangeline's room," she said. "She won't need it now that she's going off to college. It would be so nice to have a teenage girl around here!"

To her surprise, Maureen found herself hugging Ivana and welcoming her new ward to the household.

"I'll treat you just like my own daughter," she promised. If Ivana did not seem entirely happy with that prospect Maureen did not notice.

Chapter 150: Interloper!

Evangeline's daydreams about college were invaded by the sound of her father's voice. She heard him talking to Ivana, about changes they would make to her room!

She stormed into the living room with a red haze clouding her vision.

"You could have at least waited until I moved out!"

"Christ on a cruch, Ivana!" she screamed. "You're supposed to be my best friend! You could at least have waited until I moved out before you horned in on my room! And my parents!"

Earnest cleared his throat, loudly. "Such language, young lady!"

"I'm sorry, daddy!" she said. Then she turned back to Ivana. "But you, Jezebel! Just what do you think you're doing?"

Her mother's calm voice threw ice water on her rage. "It wasn't Ivana's doing, dear. I asked Ivana to move in. I"m sorry that I didn't think about the schedule for how to do this."

"Really, um, I--" Ivana said.

Evangeline held up her hand. She paused a moment to catch her breath and think this through. It suggested possibilities. Her heart felt like gelatin. It was so confusing.

"Oh, it's all right, Ivana," she said. "I'm sorry I yelled at you. It all makes sense, really. You need a place. And parents. And I won't have much use for mine any more. So you're welcome to them."

Chapter 151: Change In Plans

Feeling herself melting even more, Evangeline put her arms around Ivana and warmly embraced her.

Still best friends

"Are we still friends?" Ivana asked.

Evangeline could not resist the hopeful look in Ivana's eyes. "Best friends!" she said. "I'm sorry. It's just so hard to let go!"

Ivana giggled and whispered. "Like it was hard to let go of Zeke a few minutes ago?"

Reminded of how she came to be moving out, Evangeline herself giggled and hugged Ivana close. Best friends are people you can trust. She whispered, "Oh? So you saw that?"

"I saw everything! Or at least I can fill in what I couldn't see. He's just like his father, at least in one way!"

"His father! Do you mean you--"

"I sure did! Back then, every girl in Happy Valley was trying to tie him down, and I was no different. He was the only game in town then, but things have changed! I've been a teenager for a long time! Unlike you, I'm not so eager to grow up!"

Evangeline found herself daydreaming about Zeke's father, and decided she didn't want her mind to go there. She hastily changed the subject, in a voice loud enough for her parents to hear.

"You can move in tonight!"

"Since it's a done deal," she said, "why don't you just move in tonight, Ivana? I don't have much stuff, so there's not much to pack. I can catch the late bus to the university."

Ivana was startled by the suggestion. "Are you sure?"

"Sure as sure can be! Just let me get a few things out of your way and I'll run down to the bus stop!"

'I'll have to move quickly,' she thought, 'before mom and dad start raising objections!'

Chapter 152: Hasty Farewells

'Uh oh! I can see mom getting worried already!' Evangeline thought. 'Gotta move fast! Ivana can have my makeup and my teddy bear, for all I care! I have to get out of here now!'

And so, with that, she scrambled to her room and changed out of her cadet uniform. She frantically stuffed her mascara and a clean pair of panties into her purse and hastened back to the living room.

Evangeline says goodbye to her mother.

Her mother had a bewildered look when she said goodbye, but dad seemed to be taking things in stride. He was welcoming Ivana to the family. Evangeline felt a pang of jealousy, but never mind that now!

Bye, Dad!

Just as hastily, she said her farewells to her father, and then finally to Ivana.

"Take good care of my parents!"

"Bye Ivana! Keep in touch! Take good care of mom and dad for me!" 'You conniving, interloping little-- Oh, forget about it, Evangeline! You've got better things to think about!' Nevertheless, she couldn't resist the urge to surreptitiously slip her hand into the back of Ivana's shorts and give her a squeeze. As hard as she could. With fingernails.

Ivana yelped. "Um, I'll miss you, too!" she said.

With farewells accomplished, Evangeline hurried out the door, leaving her parents with heads swimming at how fast their household had changed and Ivana rubbing her aching tush.

Evangeline leaves for college

The moment her feet hit the street, all thoughts of her past life vanished from her mind, crowded out by anticipation of things yet to come.

Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 153: Like a Thief in the Night

Evangeline's trip to the university was uneventful. There were only two other passengers taking the late bus back to campus. They were a young couple who sat at the back of the bus and kept to themselves. With her thoughts on her own campus career, she hardly paid any attention to them, though she thought it odd that they both wore stocking caps in Happy Valley's perpetual Spring.

The bus dropped her off at a taxi stand in the University district. She spotted a small boutique across the street. It looked like it was still open. The shopkeeper had kept the lights on, hoping to pick up a little extra money from the students who were cruising the shopping district after the movies let out. The shopkeeper was happy to have a customer, and Evangeline was glad that she could pick up a few things.

Her taxi arrived at Manse Collegium in the cool, dark hours of the early morning. The place was dark. She wondered if she should ring the bell, but decided to try the door first. To her surprise, it opened to her touch.

Only the distant ticking of a grandfather clock disturbed the silence of the living room. The house was faintly lit by the feeble glow of nightlights that seemed to grow brighter as her eyes adjusted to the darkness.

Feeling like a burglar, she crept up the stairs. Cally was asleep in the first room she peeked into, alone. She was about to close the door when Cally opened her eyes.

Before Evangeline could die of embarrassment, Cally put a finger to her lips and winked. She pointed down the hallway, and then settled back down and cuddled into her comforter. Evangeline closed the door as quietly as she could and continued her stalk through the house.

Following Cally's lead, she crept to the doors at the end of the hall.

She crept toward the doors at the end of the hall.

She found a study softly lit by moonlight through the windows and realized that she was in the room over the porte cochere. Fancy double doors beckoned on the other side of the room. Evangeline explored onward.

When she peeked in the door, she found the reward she was seeking.

She found her reward.

Ezekiel lay in a big double bed, sleeping the sound sleep of the innocent. She gazed at him for a moment, noting how his eyes rolled beneath his eyelids. It was fascinating to watch; Evangeline had never watched someone sleep before.

She quietly retreated to the study and changed into her nightie. Short, black silk; the most sensuous thing she had ever owned. She liked the feel of it against her skin.

Like a thief in the night, she stole into his bed.

Then, like a thief in the night, she stole into his bed.

Zeke stirred in his sleep, but didn't wake up even when Evangeline snuggled against him. She was wondering if she should get busy and wake him up when she, too, fell fast asleep.

Awwww! How sweetly conniving.

(Architectural question: 'way back in 141, the picture leads me to wonder, is the front entrance to Manse Collegium actually on the second floor (as far as the game is concerned), or is there something complex going on with foundations?)

(And the commercial was Very Silly! lol )

In Chapter 141, you see the entrances to both The Houstonian and Manse Orleans:

The Houstonian (Teenagers leaving home.)

Manse Collegium (Young adults arriving on campus.)
Link to Manse Collegium download and tour

I built the foundation for both houses very tall so that they would have those dramatic entry steps and rise above the neighborhood. The trick is to raise a square of ground before placing the first piece of the foundation and then build off that level for the whole foundation.

Glad you enjoyed the commercial! smile
Why do you think I built the foundations so tall?

I just had a silly thought. If I were any good at making custom 3D images for The Sims 2, I'd make the statue of Sam Houston and put it in the front yard of The Houstonian!

Statue of Sam Houston
Image pilfered from Lone Star Roads

It says on the road signs that this is the tallest statue in the world. It's 67 feet tall, so in scale the statue would be taller than the house! I'd settle for a subscale model in the game!

The real statue is located on Interstate 45 in Huntsville, Texas, the home of Sam Houston State University. I drive past it every time I do the run from Houston to Dallas. It's an important landmark on the journey.

If I'm southbound it heralds that the journey is almost complete. Northbound, it signals that I've finally made it out of the Houston metroplex. (Houston itself is a huge city, fourth largest in the USA. Its metroplex is definitely on a Texas scale, roughly the size of the state of Maryland.)

Ah, thanks! Yeah, it was the Houstonian that actually raised the question in my mind. Very effective, impressiveness-wise.

So the game does think of all the area below stairtop level as foundation? Interesting, thanks! I'll have to try that.

Experimenting last night I did a vaguely similar housefront, but using a first floor rather than a tall foundation; the front steps go up to a high porch that is as far as the game knows the second floor of the house. Then around to the side there's an inconspicuous door leading into the first floor; presumably the servants' / poor relations' entrance. *8)

Casting about for a punchline involving undergarments, but so far without success... *8)

Yup, it does if you build the top of the foundation way above ground level. (Or way below it, for that matter.)

Using a tall foundation allows you to elevate the first floor by less than the 16 shovel clicks you get if you just build a first floor for your foundation.

Chapter 154: Queen of All She Surveys

Why It's Good to Know the Bennetts

We pause in our tale for a glimpse into the near future at the growth of northwestern Happy Valley and the ever-widening web of She Who Must Be Obeyed. It is GD 132 and all is well in this sleepy little alpine vale.

So, who are those two little bundles of joy that you see in the family inset, you ask?

Ah, that would be telling!

And, of course, soon the tale will be told!

Eep! Is that a three or a five? They're richer than the DeFactos - and that's saying something...
And are we also saying that this, technically, hasn't happened just yet? I'm confused.
