Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 75: Just Follow the Instructions

At his wife's call, Greg admitted defeat in the hand-slapping game that he was playing with Giles and hurried to her side.

"Yes, ma'am? Where's the fire?"

"I want you to kiss Frieda, so she'll stop sulking."

He turned to Frieda.

Auld Lang Syne

"Gosh Frieda," he said. "If I had known--"

"Ahem!" She said. "To paraphrase Clint Eastwood, 'When it's time to kiss, kiss; don't talk.'"

"But are you sure--"

"Just follow instructions! Kiss her!"

"I'm not sure--"

"If you don't kiss her, I'll sulk!"

He's not so sure about this!

Frieda seemed eager enough, but then he said, "But what about Giles? He--"

This time Giles interrupted him. "If you don't kiss her, I'll start sulking, too!"

"His wife is having your baby and that makes him happy! You think he's going to panic about a little kiss? RTFM, boy! Smooch! Osculate! Lip lock!"

Greg swallowed hard. "OK, Frieda, brace yourself--"

"Will you just shut up and kiss her?"

He finally gets it right.

"There! Don't you both feel much better now? No more worries!"

"Oh! I do feel better!" Frieda said.

You must remember this: A kiss is just a kiss...

Greg took a breath and said, "Golly! It's been a long time!"

"Yeah," Frieda said. "And all of a sudden this doesn't seem so scary any more!"

"There!" She said. "Now that those worries are behind us, let's get on with the fun stuff! We have to find some nice maternity clothes for Frieda, and we have to redecorate the nursery, and get the kids in school, and our things will be arriving from the campus any minute now! Let's get moving!"

Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 76: Last Act of Tyranny

Before She could got on with the distractions of the day, there was an interruption from another quarter.

'Mo-o-o-o-o-om!'

'What is it, Barry?'

'I need a diaper change!'

"Excuse me," She said. "Duty calls!" And with that, she hurried to the nursery.

"How did She know?" Frieda wondered.

"Oh, She always knows!" Greg said.

The Last Gasp of Infantile Tyranny for Barry

'Thanks, Mom! I needed that!'

'At least there are some compensations for having a precocious child,' She thought. 'You've learned to be polite even while you're in swaddling clothes! Remember that, Barry: If you're going to be a tyrant, at least be a polite tyrant!'

'I'll remember that, mom!'

'I was joking! You don't want to be a tyrant at all!'

'Oh. OK. Mom, I hear someone.'

'Hear? Hear how?'

'Hear in my head. Someone new. He seems nice, but he won't talk to me.'

She concentrated for a moment, listening for psi signals.

'Oh! That's Frieda's baby! Don't try to contact your siblings, Barry, especially not before they're born. It's dangerous, and you might scare them.'

'But--'

Ready to face the world

'Ta da!' She thought. 'All done! That will probably the last time I have to change your diaper! Now you're all set to grow up, go forth, and conquer! And pretty soon you'll be responsible for taking care of these things yourself!'

'I have to change my own diaper from now on?'

'Well, you have to grow up first. Then we'll see how fast you learn.'

'Learn what?'

'You'll see.'

'Vagueries! All I get is vagueries!'

'We tell you what you need to know and don't tell you things you're not ready for.'

'Oh yeah? There was another one. Did you say I'm going to have a baby sister? Cool beans!'

'Brother. Half-brother, to be precise. But don't tell anyone. It's supposed to be a surprise!'

'So that's it! Now it makes sense. His name is Gilbert.'

'Aunt Frieda and Uncle Giles might name him something else.'

'They won't. They'll name him Gilbert.'

'How can you be so sure?'

'You'll see.'

'Touché!'

Does this mean that the newborn will also have The Gift (regarding the psi signals)? I'm confused...

Tales of Happy Valley
Appendix: A Psi is Just a Psi

Heh. That's getting ahead of the story, but in this case, it's a trivial point. Besides, this is getting to the point that we almost need a story bible for it. And on top that, the idea I was working on is too complex to present in the format of a sims-illustrated story.

It means that everybody broadcasts psi signals. Those with The Gift can control and focus them so that they produce intelligible telepathy, and sometimes they can even pick up on what Normals are thinking.

The newborn's thoughts are chaotic because the baby is just now learning to think while still in utero. Barry could hear the new thought stream but couldn't make any sense of it; hence his concern.

Greg and Sheba would hear the baby's thoughts, too, but with their more finely developed Gift the baby's thoughts would just be part of the background noise of the psi stream. They'd just ignore the signal without even consciously thinking about it.

Sheba didn't want Barry to harass the newborn for fear of frightening the developing mind, or worse yet, awakening The Gift in Gilbert as it happened with Barry. The world isn't ready for two Barrys!

Edit: I couldn't resist adding a title to this one!

I was thinking that this is a fascinating way of writing a story. Of necessity, it's a first draft, and once I've published a chapter I can't go back and do the smooth writing!

So the story develops somewhat chaotically, where all future action has to be internally consistent with all that has gone before.

The point of Chapters 71 thorugh 75 is that Frieda needed a lot of reassurance and support. She needed to know that the father of her baby loved her and that he would love and support her child. And, since She would have been in a unique position to inhibit that, it was even more important that She love and support both the mother and the child.

Frieda is in a unique position. She got pregnant way back when I was first learning to play the game and experimenting with what the characters could do. At that time, Sheba really was just one of the little girls in the neighborhood.

Greg's teen years lasted a very long time. I introduced him as a visitor in nearly every household in Happy Valley. Consequently, he got a tremendous amount of game play that wasn't on his personal time clock.

During his early career as a teenager, I was expecting that Greg would eventually settle down with either Joanne Allardice or Dallas Geieffies since the game seemed to be pushing them together. (In Baumdoubt Valley, Greg ended up marrying both Dallas Geieffies and Meadow Thayer.)

Then along came Aunt Winona, an adult sim who developed an obsession with jumping his bones.

Frieda really did get pregnant in Sheba's bed, back when Sheba was still just a child. One night, Winona wanted to invite Frieda over just before she had to go to work, so I indulged the want. Sheba was busy playing chess with Greg's brother Ralphie and her parents were busy with each other. That left Greg and Frieda to themselves, with the obvious results. As I recall, this baby was the result of an experiment with Merola's Mind Control Mirror where I was intentionally trying to find out if one visitor could get another visitor pregnant. I'm not sure how I did that because, although I can get visitors to woohoo, the Try For Baby option doesn't show up.

So, Frieda ended up in a Maxian Time Warp, carrying a baby bomb for nearly 100 Greg Days of game play. She already had a minor role in the story because she was helping out around the house while Sheba was pregnant with Barry. Then she married Gilbert (quite flamboyantly!) and became part of the major supporting cast as one of the caretakers of Manse Orleans. I had forgotten that she was fragrant, but I checked her out when she got promoted to a more significant role.

An entry in the gazetteer of the vast landscape of Happy Valley society: Frieda is a Baybrace, one of the Seven Sisters, along with Gloria and Della, and Ralphie's wife Beryl. There are three others who haven't made it into the story yet: Amber, Connie, and Edna. I think their distant cousin Billy Baybrace has done a cameo or two in either Happy Valley or Baumdoubt Valley.

Chapter 77: Transitions

Barry's Birthday

'Do I have to do this, dad?'

'Time and tide wait for no baby, Barry.'

'I take that means that I do, huh?'

'Yes. You can't remain a baby forever.'

'Not for the lack of trying!'

'Well, it's time to blow out the candles!'

'So that's what that racket is all about! Why extinguish the fire after you went through so much trouble to start it?'

'It's a tradition, Barry. We do this for good luck!'

'What's luck?'

'Luck is what's left when your all your plans go awry.'

Chapter 78: Dawn of the Conqueror (Wannabe)

Barry, the Toddler

'Yahoo! That was fun! Can we do that again?'

'Not just yet,' Greg thought. 'But there are lots of new fun things you can do now.'

'Oh, OK. Hey! Nice threads!'

'Beats the heck out of running around in just a diaper, doesn't it?'

'Sure does! What are these things on my feet?'

'Shoes. So you can learn to walk.'

'Why can't I just fly? Mom said--'

She cut in on the conversation. 'Barry, now we've talked about this.'

'Sure we have, but I'm just a baby. I'm supposed to forget things.'

'Nice try, buster. You don't forget. You just test your ropes.'

'Well, I suppose there's that--'

'So for the sake of brevity, let's just agree that you've tested your ropes, found that the rule about flying is inflexible and will not be changed, and get on with toddling.'

'OK, mom! ... Um, dad?'

'Yes, my son?'

'I think I just put my foot in the cake.'

'No worries. With a glycemic index approaching infinity, the loss of a bit of fondant is no loss at all!'

'Is this an omen? Does it mean that I am destined to grow up and be a crusader for good health, spending my life stamping out junk food?'

'No, it means we need to clean off your shoe.'

'Oh. OK.'

Chapter 79: Overqualified for Everything

Greg looks for a job. Giles provides musical accompaniment.

"Hrmph. You might as well play the blues, Giles," Greg said. "There are no jobs available. I'm over-qualified for everything."

Giles laughed and looked at his cousin. "So? You're rich! Give yourself a job!"

"Nah. That would take the fun out of it. Besides, I wouldn't want to have me for a boss."

"OK then, go for option 2: Use your network. It's who you know, not what you know; and you know everybody! I could talk to my CO."

"Thanks, Giles, but I was thinking of getting into police work."

"You were going to call you brother," She said.

"Oh, right. Good idea!" Greg said. "Hey, he's on line!"

For a while, all that could be heard in the living room of Manse Orleans was rapid key clicks accompanied by Giles's rendition of Moonlight Sonata on the piano.

"Ta da! Ralphie came through! I am now a detective with the Happy Valley Police Department! Ralphie said he would have one of the patrol babes pick me up right away!"

"That's great!" Giles said. "What do detectives do?"

"I dunno. I suppose they detect things! I hear the car now!"

"So, go forth and detect!"

"Here I go! Wish me luck! Dick Tracy, watch out! Magnum PI, step aside!"

"Wait a minute!" She said. "Kiss me before you leave, or I'll sulk!"

"My pleasure, ma'am!"

"Mmmm, I needed that!" She said. "Now off with you! Say hi to Charlie's Angels for me!"

Greg enters yet another career

And so, with all the accolades of his former careers in politics, athletics, and the military carefully tucked away in a file cabinet labeled Yesterday's Glories, Greg finally pursued his childhood dream and got into detective work.

Chapter 80: Barius Vobiscum

An Audience with Barry

'So you thought that was funny, eh?' Barry says. 'You ain't seen nothin' yet, baby! Just watch! I'm a big boy now! I wear real clothes, and I even have teeth! I haven't figured out what do with them yet except to make mom say Ouch!, but I have 'em! See?'

'Now I just have a few more things to do before I'm ready for my career in world dominion. Daddy promised to teach me to talk, and I still need to figure out how to make these shoe things work. Then there's that thing with the blocks. It must serve some very important purpose. Don't tell mom, but I figured out how to get the square peg to go through the round hole! It just takes a bit of persuasion from the triangle thing.'

'Hey, as long as you're here and mom's not watching, can you clue me in on something? They put this red plastic tub on the floor next to my crib. What's that for?'

I don't get why all Sim-toddlers have to put the square peg in the round hole, and throw tantrums when the triangular peg won't go into the triangular hole - even if they have a maxed logic skill!

Tales of Happy Valley
Inset: A Theme Song for Happy Valley

If this story were published as a book, you would find the lyrics to a song printed on the page between the chapters. To wit:

"As Time Goes By"
Lyrics and Music by Herman Hupfeld

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.
Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension

And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

© 1931 Warner Bros. Music Corporation, ASCAP

Wanna hear it? Here's a midi version of the main theme for "As Time Goes By."
(These lyrics are the orignal version that Herman Hupfeld wrote for the movie "Casablanca.")
