Where to Put Desks for College Students

Here's a little lesson I learned about arranging rooms for college students. I was wondering why some students would use their desks to do their assignments, while others would look at the desk and then sit on the floor to get their homework done.

Here's Mitch Indie to demonstrate the point.
Mitch is a Maxis-created college student. Here you see him after an extreme makeover that included a lengthy session with the sim pshrink to adjust some severe personality problems.

The wall to Mitch's right prevents him from putting his assignment on the desk
This is the arrangement in a Maxis-created house.

When they put their assignment book on the desk, the students always approach diagonally from the right. If the right edge of the desk is against a wall, they can't get there.

Open space to the right of the desk lets Mitch use it for his assignment
Nevertheless, that mondo cheapo cafeteria chair has got to go!

Moving the desk one square away from the wall is all you need to provide access. It's OK to have something in the square next to the desk as long as the square in front of it is open.

It's probably because all sims are right-handed and they don't like to bump their elbows into the wall while they are working on their homework.

The Sims1 Vacation shower/tub has the same problem. There cannot be anything in the tile at the end of the tub next to the faucets or the Sims think about being blocked.

Nice to see Maxis likes to recycle their bugs...

Well, you can't expect them to create an entire database of bugs for every new product, can you?

Just a little 'OT' question...where did you get that clothes rack? I supppose it's really a dresser?

The clothes rack is Tom's Clothing Tester, from the Testing Cheats:

1. boolprop testingcheatsenabled true

2. Shift-Click on a sim

3. Spawn... Tom's Clothing Tester

4. boolprop testingcheatsenabled false

Now, a warning: If you use it to change clothes, Tom's Clothing Tester can mess up your sim's career track even if you don't choose the career clothing. It's fun to play with, though.

Now that you mention it, it would be neat if someone extracted Tom's Clothing Tester, cleared out all the functions, and made it function as a normal chest of drawers.

Oh, thanks for the explanation :smilehap:
Yep, it would be neat if someone made one which could be used as a dresser!! It would look great on dorms!!
