Tales of Happy Valley
Chapter 60: Fantastic Fledgling

It's good to be Captain Hero, even if you're still in diapers!

'Yahoooooo! Look at me, mom!'

Without even looking up from the story of King Gustav and the Thirty Years War, Greg said, "I didn't see that, did I?"

"No you didn't dear," She said.

"Oh, good. I'll just sink a bit deeper into denial, then."

"BARRY!"

'But, Mom! You didn't say I couldn't fly!'

"It's all right to fly as long as nobody else is around to see you. You need to practice some time, but don't buzz your father while he's studying."

'Oh. Oops! OK! I won't do that!'

"And one other thing, it's way past your bedtime, young man!"

'Awwww mooommm...'

"NOW!"

'Ohhhh kayyy. G'night, mom!'

"Good night, Barry. I love you!"

'I love you, too, Mom.' (Even if you do make me take naps!)

"I heard that!"

'Oops! Night, Mom!'

'G'night, Barry!'

*chortle*

Yup. If you look back in the story you'll see that I was dropping hints all over the place that something about Barry was more than half a bubble off plumb, but I figured nobody would anticipate just how special he was because all the rest of the stories are pretty much mundane. lol

Incidentally, except for Barry's contrail, the picture of him flying around the den is a straight screen shot. He really was flying over the stereo when I snapped the picture. :airplane:

Chapter 61: Strategic Planning

More days of intensive study ensured, and soon graduation loomed near for She and Greg. True to his word, Barry stopped using his gift to influence people to serve him, but this was no loss. He found that he could be almost as effective by just being a baby.

Early one morning, when his parents were in the last semester of their Senior year in college, Barry was looking for someone to play with. Daddy was being totally boring, out in the front yard chopping the growth organs from the solar-collecting life forms that live there.

Greg Trims the Bushes

He didn't see much point to those life forms. They weren't good to eat and Daddy had to work hard to keep them under control. If Daddy is so worried about them growing, why not just get rid of them? Maybe it was because they provided a home to such interesting crawling things. Mom liked the crawling things, and Daddy liked to do things for Mom. Yeah, that must be it.

Barry knew better than to bother Daddy while he was killing the green life forms. Besides, Mom was adamant about not flying around outside where someone might see him. Oh well, maybe She was doing something more interesting.

He found his mother in the study. He had never seen Her working so intently at the machine. Even when She had been writing Her final thesis (where Barry learned that not everything called a "worm" looks like the things you find in the garden), She had not been such a paragon of focused concentration.

Barry Finds His Mother in the Study

'Whatcha doin', Mom?'

'Designing a house. It's a surprise for your daddy.'

Barry flew around so that he could see Her computer screen. 'It looks a lot like this one!'

'Watch your wake turbulence,' She thought, 'it's distracting, and I want to get this just right.'

'Oops! Sorry! I like that one, Mom. Whatcha gonna call it?'

'You mean
"What are you going to call it." Mind your diction, young man.'

'Aw, Mom. I'm just a baby!'

'All the more reason to develop good speech now. Practice your elocution so that you grow up with it.'

'Yes, ma'am.'

'That's better! You're already picking up your father's accent, which never did him any harm. Now, to answer your question, I'm thinking of calling it The Houstonian, after General Sam Houston. Your father isn't very fond of big, ostentatious mansions but he really admires Sam Houston.'

'So he'll like it even if he doesn't like it?'

'Well put. We need a place to live after graduation. I plan to move back to Manse Orleans with Giles and Frieda as soon as we get our diplomas, but we're going to need a bigger place.'

'A bigger place? Does that mean I'm going to have a new brother?'

'Lots of them. Sisters, too.'

'What are all those mirrors for? Is that a Captain Hero thing?'

'No, it's a blonde thing.'

'What's a blonde thing?'

'It's what guarantees that you're going to have lots of brothers and sisters!'

Chapter 62: A Day that Will Live in Infancy

'Hot dawg! I hear Daddy coming in!,' Barry thought.

'Quick!' She replied. 'Back to your crib!'

Heedless of his wake, Barry rushed to his crib, arriving just seconds before Greg entered the nursery.

"Ah, good! You're awake, my son!" Greg said. "I was hoping to get in a cuddle or two before I have to go to my last class."

Barry and Greg

"Wheee! Lalalalala! gurgle Goo loo lob," Barry said. 'So how is King Gustav doing in the war?'

'He got killed. The cardinal made a mess of Europe and the king made a mess of England. Now stop thinking at me. You're spoiling my denial.'

'But how can we have a decent conversation if you're in denial all the time?'

"Simple," Greg said. "You have to learn to talk."

'But why bother? I'm doing fine this way.'

"There are lots of reasons, not the least of which is that you don't want people to think you're weird."

'But I am weird!'

Alexander interrupted this profound conversation by wandering into the nursery. He had just gotten up in the morning and was still in his pajamas.

"Who are you talking to, Dad?" Alexander asked.

"Just the baby," Greg said. "Here. Greet your baby brother!"

Barry and his brother Alexander

"Hi Barry! I'm Alex! I can hardly wait until you're old enough to play with!"

'Trust me, brother. You do not want to play tag with me.'

'Now hear this, Barry,' Greg thought. 'You will not use The Gift to cheat at games.'

'You're more fun when you stick to denial, Dad.'

'Then behave yourself. If you think your mother is tough, you ain't seen nothin' yet, kiddo.'

Oblivious to the silent conversation, Alexander continued. "Do you think he'll like to play chess, Dad?"

"If he takes after his parents at all, I'm sure he will," Greg said. "Your mother and I have been playing chess since She was your age."

'Pawn to King 4,' Barry thought.

'Try the Panov-Botvinnik Attack to the Caro-Kann Defence, Variation I-A-1-a,' Greg replied.

'The what?'

'You'll just have to wait until you learn to read, my son. Until then, prepared to have your siblings wipe the floor with you any time you challenge them to a game.'

'Darn! There's so much to learn!'

'Yup! And one of the things you'll learn is that the more you learn, the less you know!'

Greg . . . I love Baby Barry!

I never thought this kind of twist would come up in the story . . . excellent and completely unexpected! =)

Someone . . . should show this story to Maxis, in fact all your great stories should be shared with them. I bet they'd get a kick out of what you've done, these really are GREAT! =D

I want to see Barry rule the sim universe! :shades1:

Chapter 63: The Graduates

They Got Their Diplomas!

At last, the big day arrived when the Bennetts completed their coursework and graduated from Happy Valley University. She earned her degree in biology, and he in history. Dagmar, the mail lady, was the first to hear the good news.

She had been hoping they could get off by themselves for a private little celebration, but the delay caused by stopping to receive congratulations from Dagmar spoiled Her plan.

They've Been Spotted!

Alexander was the first to notice that Mom and dad were back from their finals. He called to the girls, and the party started right there on the front lawn. It only took a word from Alex for Gloria, Della, and Penelope to rush out to greet them.

The Impromtu Lawn Party Grows...

Then Katelynn the maid came out to pay her respects, followed by Amanda, who called the gardener over.

... and Grows

Among the residents and regulars at Manse Collegium, only Della (who was at class) and Barry (who taking a nap) missed the event. When Amanda suggested they should invite her grandparents over for a graduation party, She finally put Her foot down, reminding Alex and Amanda that they needed to tend to their own studies. She asked Gloria to run interference so that She could have some time alone with Her husband.

Chapter 64: A Private Moment

They Finally Have Some Time Alone

And so at last, with Gloria minding the children and Barry sound asleep, they were finally able to share some time together without the stress and worries of books, studying, and grades.

Tomorrow they could deal with getting moved back to town and putting the kids back into school. They had new careers and new horizons ahead of them, but for a while at least, all those things could wait.
